My mom found a few loose random cards in some storage in her attic a little while ago when she was getting summer decorations down or something. So she called me to tell me about them and I was stoked thinking it might be something awesome! Well it turned out to be a different form of awesome then I was thinking:
This chansey went through the washing machine at my grandmother’s house when I was somewhere between the ages of 8 and 9. My mom, brother, and I were living with her at the time. I remember loving this card cause it was the highest hp card I owned, plus it was holographic! So obviously the washing machine did a number on it! Im pretty sure I cried haha. But my mom saved the day by taking it with her to work and laminating it for me! So as a lad I was happy again, who cared about the word pokemon and a pokeball on the back at age 8?! It was awesome to have those memories about that card and its story come back to me when I first laid eyes on it again. The other cards with it were a non Holo dark machamp, dark flareon, base 2 kadabra, base 2 weepinbell, neo gen lanturn, non holo jungle snorlax, and a neo discovery dunsparce!
It’d be super cool to see some other folks cards from your childhood here too! The title says wrecked but if you have any cards from your childhood collection years with a cool story then certainly share it! But definitely the wrecked ones!
Boy oh boy do I have a story for you. So I kept a small pile of cards from my childhood, one of them was a Lt.Surge’s Magneton. About 3 years ago my younger cousins and I started collecting Pokémon cards. I felt that as a “cool” older cousin I should give them old school cards. So I decided to give one of my cousins, Ullises this Magneton I had kept safe for almost a decade.
A couple of days after that I visited this said cousin. We were chillin just kickin it back when Jonathan (Ulisses’ older brother) comes up to me and says, “hey Meño(Me) guess what this twerp did with the Magneton you gave him”. I asked Ulisses “what’d you do bro???” He quickly proceeds to have not a single answer to my question.
I went into his room since he wasn’t going to tell me. When I go in there I promptly see a shoe box that read “pOkEmOn cArDs”. On that box there was some things taped to it as decorations. One of those disgustingly taped things to the box was that Magneton.
“Holyyyyu sh$t!” I say “BRUH!” After that we all proceeded to squeal at him like roaring pigs! He felt so roasted and I was super disappointed at him. So I managed to remove and salvage my poor card. This is the result:
Almost all of my cards from Base, Jungle, and Fossil had some wear and scratches but nothing terribly bad. I was able to get binders by the time Gym Heroes came out. I actually have questioned if I should do a “played” collection of Gyarados cards at some point because there’s a sense of satisfaction of seeing people play them and trade them simply because they liked the card and didn’t care so much about condition. If people want to see, I have two Gyarados Base cards that I purchased for cheap that I can show later – one is just scratched and worn, another card is badly waterlogged and had the holo pattern peal away.
Yeah the holofoil is what triggered me; maybe it suffered some kind of dmg as he states and card ended up looking like that. I seen a Dragonair from Base Set (wich is non holo) as a holo with the same Holo pattern tho (fake card).
I’ve also seen a bunch of Charizard and Blastoise fakes with a similar looking holofoil. But I was also doubting a bit due to the damaged claim. Maybe it somehow was soaked in some kind of fluid, but more likely is that it’s indeed fake.
I’ll admit I haven’t looked at it very closely myself. May be a fake but I’ll double check for other signs. Never seen a warerlogged holo so made some assumptions.
mikejoofthecoast my most wrecked and favorite card in my collection is very similar to yours. I was 7 years old and one of my very first cards got left in my pocket and went through the wash. My mom taught me a good lesson that day to be more careful of my things. From that day on, I kept all my cards in a binder and was always noted as the kid with the best organized collection.
