Will there come a time where counterfeits are so good you cant tell the difference.
This already happens in art and antiques. You hear stories of counterfeits so good that they end up in the largest auction houses every so often.
Given that pokemon cards are arguably potentially a lot easier to counterfeit than a antique painting. What are the chances of one day counterfeits so good that you cant tell and how can this be prevented
been wondering this as well… I’d assume there’s no reason someone could not make a card indistinquishable from the real thing… and if so, maybe the old certs will finally get the premium lol
Back to reality: if someone would produce a perfect counterfeit they would for sure write on e4. It is extremely hard to get all things right, so for the foreseeable future no. And if better counterfeits appear, better machines to detect them will be introduced as well.
It’s only a matter of would it be worth it to criminals or not. The question isn’t about if it’s possible because it obviously is, but why would anyone do this when they can fake watches, clothes etc and selling that stuff is a billion times easier.
I mean it has been proven to be very difficult since nobody has knowingly succeeded over 25 years. There are plenty of counterfeits out there, but I believe they will always be relatively easy to spot if you know what to look for. Sadly the only people who really get taken advantage of by these counterfeits are the ‘new’ collectors returning to the hobby after a long hiatus and don’t know of what to watch out for.
I know that one of my good friends fell victim to a counterfeit deal when he first bought some cards online after returning to the hobby. This bad experience kept him from partaking more in the hobby for a while until he finally got over it. I’d imagine it has the same effect on other newcomers - if they get ‘scammed’ at the outset, they perceive Pokemon collecting to be toxic and not worth it so they quit.
