I recently obtained a few Harada autographs, including 2 that are smudged.
Is it worth sending these into PSA with the others, or would that be a complete waste of money?

I would lean towards no, they would grade Mantle and Ruth maybe in that condition but might be too illegible. The only auto I could see them authenticating is a main stay and classic auto like a Mike Boozer for example.

that’s what I figured. i’m not sure that I really want to waste $40, I thought that they might have a chance because I’m also sending in 5 other Harada autographs, but most likely not.

Even if they did it would get a very poor auto grade.
I never grade the auto to begin with. I’ve personally never cared for either the card or the auto grade on autographed cards, just the authentication. I wouldn’t ever get a super expensive card like a 1st Ed. Charizard signed on the card, so the condition of the card isn’t really important and I don’t see the need for an auto grade in most cases.
In that case I can only ask myself, “Would you like to own this card graded or not?” My answer would be no, so I certainly wouldn’t waste money on grading it. Now would they grade it? Maybe. Sorry that really does help much.
No worries! We all have different preferences, some people don’t care about autographs at all, which is totally understandable.
I personally view autographs as a different collectible compared to cards. By that I mean that I focus on collecting a particular autograph and that I care less about which card is signed. This is mostly because certain individuals are super hard to find in the first place, like Sugimori. However, if I get the opportunity to meet the artist, like with Arita, then it’s definitely more fun to choose what card/ sketch that he does.

It’s certainly not as big as many others, but half of the fun is talking and trading with other collectors. Some of my cards have auto grades, and others only have card grades, and that’s because I didn’t grade all of them myself. Obviously, I would love to have certain cards signed, but that’s not always a possibility. I’m very lucky to have my Sugimori and my Saitou, as they are both some of my favorite artworks ever. Though at the end of the day I’m just happy to have the auto. For someone like Himeno, I would take almost any card at this point just to add it into the collection, but I’d happily upgrade it if I was ever given the chance. But that’s a bridge for another day.
