Enjoyment of collecting the cards/sets, hoping they slowly continue to rise in value and that great feeling when you save up for a big card purchase you really want and finally get it
I love all the avenues you can go down with Pokemon cards. So much to learn and explore. I get the same thrill I did when I was a kid. Iām a collector at heart. Iāve collected musical instruments over the years. This year Iāve funneled a lot of my disposable income into Pokemon. Iām a very low risk type person when it comes to money and investing. Pokemon cards felt like a low risk long term investment that I would have an absolute blast with and I am.
I started out as a flipper to make some money while Iām in college, at one point I bought a collection with a ton of obscure japanese promos and they were so neat that I decided to keep them lol. Ever since that Iāve kept some of everything that I buy, I guess I would be classified as a āscummy flipperā still, but my whole collection has been free because of it
pokemon
-alakazam is my favorite, I finished my goal except for grey stamp alakazam.
-got inspired by joetehman to collect energies. Almost done, but felt it impossible to find the pcg-p set.
-the rest I collect whatever it seems cool
yugioh
-highest rarities heroes (finished, just waiting for more) (second binder)
-old/htg/nostalgic/whatever it seems cool (main binder)
So to answer the question: In the past I bought cards because I liked them (and for Yu-Gi-Oh to create Decks). Nowadays I buy to get closer of completing my collection goals.
All i want to add is that the hobby is not a big hobby here in Norway. I see myself as a superhero who saves old and forgotten cards and buy them to show their true beauty and share them wih the few collectors here in the north.
I loved opening cards as a kid. The only ātoysā I cared about were Pokemon cards and Gamecube games haha. I had my parents buy me boosters all the time. From base set through ex team rocket returns give or take. Of course I stopped collecting around age 10ish because āpokemon is for little kidsā But around 16 I started to buy cards here and there and by 20 my collection was in full swing.
Idk if Iāll ever sell. Even though Iām 99% positive that these cards, especially the older ones, will keep going up in value as time goes on. And this COULD be seen as a retirement investment if they keep going up, and you buy a lot while theyāre cheap, and you keep them for 30 years.
However, in that same breath Iāll say the nostalgic factor could wear off and the prices stay the same. Or even go down. But I wonāt care. I love them for the nostalgia. My childhood was⦠okay but one of the best parts of it was Pokemon. Iāll buy these forever and keep collecting my favorites because I was very limited when I was younger as far as collecting goes. I think we all collect them for the same reasons why scientists build things such s the large hadron collider. Because we want to. Because weāre curious. Because weāre trying to satisfy the kid thatās still inside all of us.
As long as itās fun, Iāll keep collecting
The nostalgia is what pulled me in. I loved collecting cards when I was younger and did so with yugioh, dbz, and Pokemon. Like others, I thought I had aged out and stopped collecting. Something about collecting is very wholesome and peaceful. Nowadays I buy and sell to help pay off my wife and Iās Debt and in the process keep the cards I truly like the most. The handful of cards that are off limits are cards that I bought from/were given by friends and cards that have always been my favorite (CHARIZARDā:heart_eyes:). I also like to think of myself as rescuing cards from homes and getting them into the homes of collectors where they will be better taken care of
The first one being that I had kept most of my original collection, and can now afford to expand it, since I still like Pokemon (the concept).
Second reason is that as I have grown I know have a much deeper appreciation for the art in the cards, as well as the nostalgia some of them bring.
Lastly, I have recognized Pokemon has now an established collectors market, and I enjoy speculating and taking some risks here and there while I explore trade ideas, for a potential long-term future gain, especially with sealed product.
I was always into pokemon. And cards seem like a nice way to āimplementā a whole meaning of favorite pokemon in physical form. Itās nice to go through them and there are ways to store them and display them.
the art on some modern ones is ultra fantastic. Beautiful kickass artwork make some cards look like they are on an āaction figureā level instead of being just thin pieces of cardboardā¦
Also I collected games and action figures but after moving to another country i left all of that behind and still frustrated about that.
Cards on the other handā¦are a much better thing to store than boxes of figures or games. They are much more compactā¦you can literally put couple of hundreds of them in an album
