The Invention of Collecting

Stumbled upon this video. I found it very interesting. Question for everyone.

What do you think is the reason that you collect?

The art, the history and the love for pokemon…but what the video says is also true. It’s thrilling to hunt for what you seek!

Memories, and trying to hang on to them.

Terror management theory offers some insight into what was explained in the video. I always thought we collect to suppress thoughts of the unpredictable parts of our lives by recapturing the joyous moments and aesthetically pleasing parts of them. A healthy way of being happy and stress free.

collecting isn’t just a human trait, some neanderthals also collected mostly though just pebbles and shells.

I am a completionist and perfectionist at heart, so I get a lot of joy in organizing cards/spreadsheets to track things, and seeing goals completed. There’s also the nostalgia factor, obviously.

All of the above. Collecting has always been a part of me throughout my entire life. It gives comfort.

I collect Pokemon cards because it’s a response to a deep call from within the depths of evolutionary time from my hunter-gatherer ancestors that I cannot comprehend. I also like shiny, holographic cards because my lizard brain thinks they’re water.

In all seriousness, I think for me it’s a way to distill comfortable memories from a simpler time into a tangible form.

Collecting gives me an escape from a mundane work life and transforms me into an educated expert on the things I collect and others look to me for information.

Taking the items I have and preserving them as best as I can in order to leave a “legacy” as the degenerate who collected japanese cartoons better then any degenerate before me.
