Which TCG era do you think is the least appreciated by collectors?

I think it’s a toss up between HGSS and B&W. I think HGSS is probably the least appreciated just due to the off-putting “gritty realistic” style.

All of them. Just depends on who you ask.

Base set

Are you saying least appreciated meaning least monetary value?

I guess yes and also least talked about and enjoyed by current collectors.

If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have easily said XY set cards, but they’ve been very popular during this boom. And the XY-P Japanese promos are the most popular.

In 2026, I will say early Sun & Moon sets. They have rainbow rares and gold cards as chase cards. Nothing very exciting or impressive by today’s standards.

But it’s Japanese exclusive promos yet again

It is sun and moon first part (before tag teams, so sm1 → sm8b) and rightfully so. It’s the weakest proposition ever made by the TCG, I don’t think there is any debate about that ?

it’s crazy to think they made such a long streak of z tier sets
i can only extract some specific artists commons to collect from this era. Absolutely no chase unless you’re into rainbows

Now I realized the modern boom is not coming from nowhere. It’s ptcg upping their game hard first with swsh and then dropping banger sets after banger sets during SV. The progression in quality and engineering of the sets is astonishing

I want to single out Champion road here as an excellent set (that get’s basically zero attention). Some may call it lazy, but so many top tier/iconic arts getting reprints into a modern frame is just *chefs kiss* for me. It’s like a neo-ex era nostalgia dream.

I’d have to say HGSS as well. IMO, best overall card design. They DID NOT have those banana yellow borders, and yet, the cards called back to it, looked mature, and had a cohesive, defined style. (I also liked that the trainers were re-done with a few consistent art styles, like how Base had all CG art.) Primes, are also kinda cool, albeit, not well-executed, and the legends cards were the superior full arts.
