Over the past five years, we’ve seen plenty of Pokémon cards skyrocket in price due to initial hype and FOMO, only to come crashing down once the dust settled. At the same time, some cards managed to hold their value or even climb higher, surprising a lot of collectors and investors.
I’m curious, were there any cards you expected to stay expensive that ended up tanking? Or on the flip side, were there any that you thought would drop but somehow kept climbing?
I expected the Greninja ex SIR to drop the same way that the SAR did when it first came out. But the price seemingly only went up from there. Im still kicking myself for not buying several copies when it was $120ish instead of $300+.
Same, I thought they were semi-interesting but there is no way I would ever pay current prices for them.
On another note, the 1999 Tropical Wind dropped a lot from its peak and I was surprised to see some of the low sales. Given it’s history, rarity, Japanese exclusivity, and in my opinion fantastic art (Psyduck fan here), I feel like some of the lower sale prices don’t reflect the value proposition. I guess people just really want modern shiny cards printed to oblivion.
Ironically, it’s a great time to trade a couple ponchos for a Tropical Wind!
Friend, in the words of the great philosopher Ice Cube, chickity-check yourself, before you wreck yourself.
I don’t have a crystal ball, but I caution thinking about anything with this level of certainty in the pokemon card world. If you’re buying these cards because you enjoy them, and if they decrease 80% (or something) in value you don’t mind, then all is good. But if that would cause you financial strain, or you wouldn’t enjoy them as much because they’re now worth less than before, proceed with caution imo.
The Rainbow Chonkachu stands out to me as it was the latest chase card when I re-entered the hobby. I remember the prices being outrageous (> $1k) and now PSA 10s are around $300
