What are your most favourite or memorable episodes from over the years?
Back in the 90s in my hometown, there was a small VHS rental store and the only Pokémon cassette they ever had was this “Thunder Shock!". I really wanted to watch Ash on his adventures so I borrowed it every time anyway.
Mystery at the Lighthouse (E13) - The poor giant Dragonite only wanted to make new friends and Team Rocket shot at him with a freakin bazooka. The sounds they used for its crying resembled a whale song which made it ten times more sad. After this episode, I really started hating Team Rocket.
Electric Shock Showdown (E14) - The iconic fight of Pikachu vs. Raichu, 8 foot (243 cm) tall bodybuilder Lt. Surge and Team Rocket actually being the good guys for once. It made me start thinking that nothing was probably just black and white and I was super confused after what they did to that Draginote before.
Battle Aboard the St. Anne (E15) - And now the final episode from the VHS. Ash traded his beloved Butterfree for a random Raticate and I felt so much relief when he eventually got it back. But then, Team Rocket attacked the crew, the ship sank and… it was the biggest cliffhanger ever. I only found out many years later what actually happened next because there was no internet back then and the rental store didn’t have the next VHS.
There’s a special place in my heart for anything to do with Pallet Town and the surrounding area. It’s like the Pokemon version of The Shire, heaven on earth.
It can be only one for me; the Sabrina/Kadabra episodes. Really well script. It´s also interesting that the animé resembles the games in that Psychic type Pokémon are hardcore.
The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis (EP72) was pretty memorable to me as it was one of the episodes on a casette I had and you know darn well that thing was set on repeat as I didnt have much else.
There were a couple episodes on that thing but what made EP72 different was that it had giant pokemon. I’d be very surprised if they made actual cards for them, like an Ancient Form Dynamax.
I think for me the combination of “Ash Catches a Pokemon” and “Bye Bye Butterfree” from Season 1 still hit hard to this day. It’s like having a child, seeing it grow, and finally seeing them leave.. or like when a good friend you’ve known for years moves away:
I agree. This was one of my favorites. Charizard was just so powerful. I loved it’s attitude throughout the series, yet this battle showed it’s not all rebellion it’s about respect
