I was just thinking about this after I left a comment about how commonplace it is to see Poncho/Mario Pika’s at card shows these days.
But there are rare occurrences where you get to see some truly special cards that you may only see in person a few times in your life. Would love to hear what you guys have seen out there.
For me I recently saw a Trophy Kangaskhan at a show earlier this month, wish I’d taken a photo of it to be honest, but I think it was a PSA 7.
(And then not for sale, but it’s always cool to see the Trophy Pikas displayed at worlds)
I’ve only been to a single card show (excluding Worlds in London), which was coincidentally last month (the Dracoon Collectors Beurs).
I was surprised to see a Trophy card (it was a 2023 No. 3 iirc, but I could be completely wrong ) at one of the stands (although NFS), among all the modern FA cards and vintage holos that were mostly seen at all the stands. That stand was definitely the most interesting in the hall, since they also had some unpeeled Japanese promos; Japanese Natta Wake promos and magazines; and other old back Japanese stuff.
That’s what I was thinking too. I saw two Trophy Kangaskhans at Collect-A-Con in Chicago in October. Someone had a PSA 8, and the booth in your photo had that 7. But they also had this Snap Gyarados which is probably the rarest card I’ve seen in person.
Washington state has a lackluster scene for card shows, but the times I have went the vendors are friendly and I had a good time.
In the first picture, it was cool to see a blank stamp out in the wild; second picture was leagues above the average collection and was amazing from a price perspective. The average collection was gold stars PSA 7s-8s and a bunch of modern.
Side topic, but I was with a friend and wanted to show him a hidden fates zard #sv49, as this card was the chase that brought a lot of people back into the hobby. I don’t pay much attention to modern, but it was a lot harder to find than expected. It’s still holding strong at $1000 though
If you go to a collect-a-con or other large card shows in a major cities seeing low pop trophy cards feels more common then it should these days. Off the top of my head I’ve seen multiple trophy kangas, 2(ish) Illustrators, maybe 1 or 2 snap cards.
They are always technically “for sale” but usually not really though. More of an advertisement to get us common folk to the booth then sell us on a low mileage Charizard set card
One I have yet to see is a SSB Mewtwo. I’d really like to see one of those someday.
Clean raw vintage at a fair price is the coolest thing I’ve seen. Feels like trophy cards are more common these days.
Some cool cards I’ve seen this year and last. I’ve still never seen an old back Pika trophy, Umbreon gold star play promo, or Snap card (besides my own hehe ) in person and really want to.
