What's Hot Right Now?

Hey all, this is my first post on this site!

I had collected cards from maybe 8-12 years old. I collected up to the end of EX era sets at this time. I then started again at 18, but quickly stopped. I purchased the odd card or two, infrequently for about six months, but no high-value cards due to lack of expendable income. I think the World Pikachu series was the last purchase I made as I like Pikachu art.

I now have some money I can put into this hobby. It’s something I tend to come back to once in a while, so I am wondering what’s popular for collectors right now and if there is anything recommendable across all eras. Generation 1-3 is my knowledge base for actual Pokemon, anything in Diamond & Pearl and beyond is currently unknown to me.

The only new set I have seen and I do quite like it is the Scarlet & Violet 151 set, I may buy this, but I would like to hear opinions on this set first as I want to make informed purchases.

Thank you in advance!

nah waifus were hot/hyped last year, not anymore. Id say in my opinion that whats hot is alt arts. You mention 151, and sv, they have great alt arts. Id look into swsh alt arts too, those sell/trade/buy like hot cakes at conventions(have been to many collect a cons), ebay, tcgplayer. These past two eras have been all about alt arts!

Lots of attention in these areas right now.

Modern:

  • SM, SW/SH, SV Alt Arts
  • Van Gogh Pikachu
  • Scream Collection
  • Poncho Pikachus and Poncho Eevees
  • Worlds Promos

Vintage:

  • Base 1st Ed
  • e-Series Crystal Pokemon
  • EX-era Gold Stars

Less attention (and cheaper prices) for: unlimited WoTC holos, EX-era holos and most EX cards unless it’s a popular Pokemon, D&P Lv.X cards, Black & White shiny Pokemon.

I would also like to add that I’ve noticed an uptick in the XY era as well. I’ve been focused on that era for the last couple of years, watching prices slowly increase. Then the day Pokemon Z-A was announced some of the more popular cards had an instant bump which seems to be still holding today.

I think most things have been covered, but some of my favorite things (with varying barriers to entry) are:

  • SWSH alt arts/character rares (SM character rares are also cool)
  • Stamp promos
  • Worlds promos including Yokohama Pikachu ex
  • Van Gogh Pikachu
  • 151 + Celebrations (the Japanese classic collection is also a cool throwback)

most people are buying modern sets from SV and SWSH eras. I tend to focus there, but i still buy anything that catches my eye from gens 1-4 mostly.

How much did @admiral pay you for this post

Alternate arts are an area I need to look into and research some more! I don’t necessarily need only the chase or rarer cards; I always used to be a set collector, and I will likely remain as such, too.

Thank you for this detailed answer. I think my interests are focussed on more vintage than modern. It’s baffling that there are over 1000 Pokemon in the Pokedex now. I am used to less than 400 :joy:

Would you consider the HGSS Base Set modern?

I don’t know anything about the XY Era, but I will research it and see what fascinates me!

These are some areas I don’t know much about and I think I will spend some time going through what information is available about these. I have a feeling most pomotional cards will fascinate me and lead me down a rabbit hole or two.

Generations 1-3 is all I know much about right now, but hopefully over the next few weeks, I will know a bit more about Generations 4-9 :grimacing: :joy:

Id really like to point out that it really depends on the individual, and so what they collect like trainers, sealed stuff, etc. I personally think Crown Zenith and 151 are pretty hype right now, but that could die off any day.
