What would you do if you made a big pokemon sale?

$1MM doesn’t necessarily provide retirement but invested and managed wisely it can easily provide a perpetual $20,000-$40,000 without ever touching the principle. For some that is livable. (Things like financial independence, leanfire, and/or homesteading are big movements picking up more steam each year I think)

That’d surely allow for a lot more independence. Most would blow it on a new house, car, or more fancy cardboard but I’d put it all in classical productive investments that threw off some income (and maybe a little shiny cardboard, but bought with earnings not principle). It’d probably allow for me to “retire” from having to work for anyone else for the rest of my life. I could do my own thing be my own boss and only need to earn a little each year to get by. Would certainly knock 10-20 or so mandatory years off the 9-5 grind at a minimum.

I make money. I invest money. It’s a circle I can never break. There is never too much money. There will always be something else we want. Plus I like my money to go make me more money. Simply blowing a ton of random things that aren’t useful doesn’t bring me much joy at all. I’m much happier when my money’s busy at work collecting more over time. Here’s another point. We were talking a million dollar sale. Well what would the million worth of cards be worth in 10-20 years plus? I’d bet everything I own it would be worth a ton more selling later. I just like to like a somewhat normal life and don’t live outside of my means. Only things I’d do different if I didn’t care about money is buy another boat. A working one this time. Or charter more fishing boats to go out on trips trying to catch my favorite species of fish. As well as some of the more rare ones. I want to deep drop for Tile Fish which are beautiful but expensive trips because you have to go out so far to find them usually.

Man oh man.

A million dollars kool. This post Priceless

Yes its very fun to talk about ourselves and pokemon cards, but my post is about what would you do if you sold card for a large amount, considering the poverty and change in the world you would like to see. You can start a new business, live and do any job you would like.

There’s folks here talking about retiring early, but what does that mean? Sitting at home and buying your hobby cards online? Or are you tired of backbreaking labor and would like to retire early?

Again, pokemon is a hobby and so I was wondering if that card you held for years just magically got up to $15,000 or $75,000 and you sold it, it would allow you to do so much more then had you not had that 75,000. Start that business you always talked about? Helping a society out? There’s much focus on pokemon as an investment but I’m interested to hear type of businesses or charities you’ve since done.

Keep pushing the bars!?

I’m just here to chat about pokemon cards. I’m not sure what you’re getting at. I had a few typos in the last post and I did not edit is why it looks a bit odd. I was telling the story about a recent sale, and how I contributed a dollar to some homeless man that asked.

@dblast Hello I’m not trying to be mean but a lot of us are really having trouble the past few weeks. You make a thread to get some discussions going. People respond. But it seems like you never like anyone’s response. And just revert back to the opening lines of thread. Like your PSa 7 one. There’s nothing I wrong with a PSa 7 but you mentioned a PSa 7 Clefairy like 800 times in that thread. This one you keep reverting back to donations. The Evolutions Charizard vs base set unlimited thread you would not accept the fact that we simply don’t like that version of the card nearly as much as original base set. I’ve come to the conclusion no matter the topic you will never like the response. I’m going to have to steer away from any thread with a Blastoise in the username

Maybe clefairy psa 7 is good is why it was re-mentioned @mcorey777,

This thread was to talk about big dollar sales, and more so to steer away from buying more pokemon cards with the profits, perhaps new business ventures or charities they enjoy to contribute to. Buying new cars, paying off debt and more vacations is nice too… Someone asked me about my charities or something so I mention a recent sale and recent donation

If I had a really nice collection and sold it I would look for deals, buy the cards I love again, and potentially repeat.
Pokemon, and money. Two things I really love.

If I could give all my cards for an amount that would provide financial security for the rest of my life, I’d happily do it. I’d probably leave my current job, do a lot more of the volunteering that I already do, and focus on pursuing a career I’m really interested in but that I haven’t pursued because it wouldn’t offer much pecuniary gain.

I probably have $30k to $60k in cards in my personal collection that I plan on probably (most likely won’t) selling 90% of in a few years. The goal in doing so being to raise money towards buying land/building a house for my pregnant fiancee and our future family (due in December). Soley for the purpose of being able to tell people “this is the house that pokemon built” lol.

Ideal job would be having enough money to nver work anymore. Then buy all poke trophies.

What’s this idea of retiring early… are you doing back breaking labor daily 8-5? Are you crushing stones, moving heavy objects etc routinely? If so, yeah retiring early would be great.

US pres has been billionaire since 80’s still working in his late 70s, gives up his paycheck as well.
How come we keep calling Gary Old? Yes debatable, but are these really 20s and 30s saying they want to work less already?

If you sell card for 1 billion and it’s still not enough to enjoy, you just reinvest it into pokemon cards, and let the other multi billionaires worry about saving the world. Right?

Surely you have enough money, continue working, and donate to your charities you love. I thought I would hear PETA and other organizations be mentioned. Do you not wake up daily thinking how can I make the world a better place? Those that have sold items for large dollar amounts in pokemon?

My life would not be any different. If I made a bunch of this hypothetical money, most of it would just sit in savings, some would be used to remodel a room or something in my house, and some would be used to buy stuff I like.

Not really that exciting.

I would buy a lovely chateau in France. And an F-Type Jaguar. I get to keep my binders right?

Nope, I don’t think about making the world a better place. I think it’s foolish to think your job in life is to think you know how to make the world better. All I know is how to effect those close to me and my world, worrying about others outside of my circle isn’t my focus. I can’t worry about them, they have their own life and I have to trust that their lives are to be lived how they want. Even if I don’t agree with their life style or the choices they make.

Alan Watts has a good speach for this thread. I can’t find the original speach, but the below is good enough:

I’d also recommend you read Jordan Peterson’s 12 rules of for life if you get the chance.

They really appreciate it when you help out the less fortunate. There are people that can’t even pay rent, let alone insurance, car, shelter, gas, dentist visits, or pokemon cards.

@dblast, that is an excellent point. With $100M+ you can make a tremendous difference in state and local political races and even Congress, along with supporting your preferred charities.
