Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow were the first, and also most broken, games in the franchise. It didn´t help that most of us that started with these games were very young when we started playing (I remember being stuck for a good amount of time because the old man wouldn´t move).
So, what was your main objective when playing Red, Blue Yellow?
Defeating the Pokémon-league
Catching them all
Beating your brother/sister with the link-cable
Catching a lvl. 132 Rhydon without corrupting your safe-file
3rd option but with classmates. I had a high level Hypno that stomped everyone at the playground. No idea if it’s actually a good Pokemon in competitive, but as dumb little kids it was.
My goal was mainly beating the game and training my team to level 100. I did catch a level 151 Snorlax though, and that was fun. I never had catching them all as a goal because dealing with trading between games I didn’t own felt like a daunting task.
I don’t have a good memory so this could be mostly fiction but I think my very first contact with the game was in Korea, my older cousin had a cracked cartridge, the ones with hundreds of GB games pre installed on it. There were the 3 versions in japanese I think and no ability to save.
So my goal was just to push it as far as I can during the limited time I had access to the Gameboy, without any ability to read the dialogues. After 3 or 4 runs from zero I think I managed to push it past viridian forest and get mugged by Brock
I remember how exciting it was to be able to choose between the 3 starters, the dilemma of engaging with your companion for the rest of the game, a total stroke of genius ! And the music
hacking in cool mon and attack combos that shouldn’t exist to be the game in extra fun ways. I’d have never gotten into hacking and programming if not for PkMn meddling. =)
So, I guess my goal was beating the elite four with my favorite monsters (and the most spectacular moves).
