What Is Your Favorite WOTC Set?

I remember when Neo Genesis was released. Amazing set!

This is beautifully put. Beyond having personal nostalgia for the set, there is something raw and pure about the original Base Set card designs. An age of innocence, if you will. It just pulls on my heartstrings.

And yeah, Himeno definitely slew in Jungle.

Neo Revelation is my number 1. My favorite since 2001, something that will never change.

Totally.

1st edition will always be top choice but for me personally has to be aquapolis, can’t beat that artwork quality. It has quickly become my favorite.

Gym Challenge has got to be my fav set if all time. Yes it has fantastic artwork and the backgrounds of each holo have some cool things in it. But the really cool thing I loved as a kid, and still love today, was that these were the gym leaders pokemon. I always thought it would be cool if we could take that guys offer on nugget bridge and battle as part of team rocket. Or be able to unlock other characters like in Pokemon Puzzle League. And finally, we had our chance! We could battle as if we were co trolling the most bad ass trainers in the game! AND it tied into the show! Giovannis Persian and Nidoking. Blaines Arcanine. Misty must have evolved her Psyduck into a Golduck! And it even had some ties to the manga. Misty’s Gyarados, that had also belonged to Red. I could use that same one! The raichu that fought in a literal war was mine! Koga’s Arbok that could regenerate was right there! I cant get enough of this set and I thoroughly enjoy every single card in the set.
I’m two cards away from completing my 1st edition psa 10 set of the series and I’m probably going to be just as proud of that complete set as I am of the Trophy Kangaskhan I just bought. Best set in my opinion

Gym Heroes hits me right in the nostalgia.

On my playgound and group of friends Jungle was the peak of the hype, fossil was a little less, and by the time Rocket came no one was having fun with it anymore despite my own fun with it. I then moved on, but I happened to be by my old card shop and saw Misty’s Tentacruel, Blaine’s Moltres, Erika’s Dragonaire, and Rocket’s Scyther, and there was this pull toward it.

I was there when base set was released and opened packs from every single WOTC set when I was a kid but neo genesis has my vote!

Really good idea! Making more polls in the future would be fun too

This was a tough call, there’s a ton of stuff I love in Aquapolis and Skyridge. The Neo sets have absolutely phenomenal stuff as well, tons of cards that remind me of my first Pokemon game (Crystal). I ended up voting Gym Challenge though because I think the artwork and the Pokemon in the set are my favourites. But honestly it’s more of a 1A, 1B, 1C, etc. situation haha there’s a ton of amazing cards in every set.

As a kid, I started getting into buying pokemon cards right around unlimited base so anything from base to fossil triggers some serious nostalgia for me.

Has to be unlimited base set for me.
I remember trading my base set Charizard for a Holo Spanish Jungle Jolteon back in the day as a kid. I didn’t even realise it was Spanish at the time i was too young to know any better… It’s the only Holo card i still have with me today from back then

Did we really need this poll?

gym heroes and base 2 tied for dead last…

This is an outrage. I am outraged.

All 3 e-series sets really showcase how fun, creative, and beautiful Pokemon card artwork can be. WOTC really set them up well and allowed them to have more creative liberties than they ever had in previous sets. I have Expedition as my favorite set but I think all of them are fantastic in their own right. I selected Expedition because it has 2 different artworks for the Kanto and Johto Basic and Stage 2 Starters… (personal favorites are early 2000’s cgi Charizard/Feraligatr/Blastoise, and “crocodile swimming in the water” Feraligatr/Blastoise). The set also has a beautiful Mew card, a really cool Mewtwo and a hairy Gengar (that none of us asked for, but are glad we have it).

gym heroes for sure… sabrina’s gengar… and seeing misty on the front of those packs just takes me back to the summer they were released walking in the toy store and just seeing a huge bin of them in there… gym challenge/challenge from the darkness japanese is 2nd for me/if not tied for first with gym heroes… jungle/fossil/rocket would come after those… not a huge fan of base/base 2…

I heavily agree on beautiful artwork part, I also think the e-series marks the peak of the original era in terms of creativity.
But one thing confuses me a bit, because I see it all the time: people saying things like ‘WOTC really went all out for the artwork in their final sets’ or in this case ‘WOTC really set them up well and allowed them to have more creative liberties’.

But WOTC didn’t have anything to do with the artworks ever, or did they? Wasn’t the Japanese Media Factory responsable for the choice of artworks all along and WOTC just happened to have the rights to print the translated versions of the original Japanese cards for the western world?
Which would mean they didn’t intentionally light up fireworks for their last sets, but it’s rather just a neat coincidence that the last set they were allowed to print happened to have fantastic artwork. (Not to mention that WOTC often merged multiple smaller JP sets into one larger Eng set)

I could be wrong though, somebody care to clarify?

Neo genesis is the first second gen set and had a new badass pokemon, Lugia, which coincided with pokemon the movie 2000.

It has the makings of everything that makes a set great.

1st ed base mainly because of nostalgia. I remember it being like a legendary thing at the time and only being able to find unlimited. Even then I hated base 2 lol.
