What happened to Creatures Deck: Corporate History cards?

I’ve been away from the hobby for a few months (Still kind of away, but slowly getting back into collecting)

These cards have only been dropping since they have released. Energies/Trainers used to be around $1000 and now selling for around $2-300. Chansey/Zard/Marnie are still up there, but most are just wayyy down. I remember charmanders used to be around $4k and now they’re down 50% :skull:

I think they just suffer from being a bit niche. They’re cool cards, but they were hyped up initially driving prices skyward, and now that the hype-dust has settled people seem to be less interested in them. I do own one of the cards and generally like it because it fits into the niche category of stuff I like to collect (the holo on it is kind of nice as well and hard to fully appreciate from scans), but wouldn’t be nearly as slow to sell it as I would most of my other cards if I got a good price for it. There’s room for growth, but outside of the main players you already outlined I don’t think that growth would happen until a longer time horizon.

I think very few people actually wanted these cards and or wanted to collect them. I think most people saw flipping opportunities.

Sometimes the simplest answers are usually the correct answers.

These are both very fair points. They aren’t that flashy and only really interest people who like the cameos/trivia cards and/or the pokemon

The general market direction isn’t favorable to these cards right now. When they were released, vintage was a huge deal and was driving the market, combined with rare and exclusive trophy cards. These fit exactly what the market was looking for at the time.

Now, it’s modern cards and modern releases that are driving the market. Rises in vintage are being driven more by proximity to modern than their own fundamentals or anything else. The cards are still super cool and I would say they have good long-term potential, but dropping right now seems perfectly in line with how the market is behaving.

if u pick gengar or umbreon from skyridge its gone up 4x but if you pick another non-crystal e-series holo its gone up by maybe 10-20%

I like these card and the release, but they are just special edition reprints for the most part.

I remember I bought a zapdos then sold it about a year later since I figured that I can sell it and use the money towards the History Gate.

History Gate and Beta Chansey are the standouts of that set for me personally since they are exclusive art not seen in any other sets.

Overall the cards are nice but there is a decent amount of supply and they suffer from many collectors not even knowing about there release (which is why they are also niche).

Perhaps one day they will have there time in the spotlight again.

Yeah I really want to snipe a History Gate one of these days, I love that card so much. For sure I think these cards are super sick; Its just sad to see people are dumping these cards

Consider that the originating prices were never going to be sustainable. When they first came out, it was almost taboo. These were supposed to be owned and kept by Creatures employees, not graded and auctioned by companies.

Since release, dozens of oddities, print tests, pseudo-trophies, etc. have come out of the woodwork. When this happens, collector and speculator attention splits and most move on to the next big thing. Pair that with an increase in supply, and you will see pretty aggressive price drops.

Are there any known numbers or estimates for total number of these decks given out to employees?

The estimation is that there are around 393 creatures Decks. This is based on the 175 creatures employees at that time plus the 218 illustrators.

But there is no official information wether all of the creatures employees received this or not. So the numbers could be lower as well but not much higher.

Here is an great article about this:

Non-unique art except Beta Chansey and History Gate.

More employees ended up selling than expected + the collectors who really wanted a card or deck have already purchased them by now. I love the Chansey but I got mine years ago, why would I buy another for my collection? Maybe if it gets even cheaper but the point remains.

There may even be more than what we originally estimated.

Steve Aoki visited The Pokemon Company HQ in Japan in late 2023 and was given a sealed Creatures Deck box by Ishihara.

We can only assume other visitors, of a similar caliber, may have also been given boxes during a visit.

Oh I didn’t know. Thanks for this!

Unfortunately I guess we will never know the exact amount of 25th anniversary creatures decks that were given out. But I still think the numbers in the mentioned article are our best bet.

It is also unclear which illustrators really got a creatures deck. I read at the time that not all assumed illustrators received one.

I think there are some ppl who didn’t get one but then there are ppl who got one like Aoki. For that reason I believe the numbers will remain more or less the same as stated in the article.

But of course all of this remains a guessing game without official numbers.

You have to separate out the desirable ones from the less desirable. Obviously Charizord, Chansey, History Gate carry their own identity but all the others basically blur together.

As I said on discord in 2023, If we assume 400 sets total (which may be an underestimation), that’s 10,000 cards total. If just 10% of those sets (40) ever go up for sale, that’s still 1000 cards total. There’s enough desirability behind the Chansey at 40 copies to maintain a high price but for most of the cards in the deck, there are just not enough people interested to maintain a $1k pricepoint today.

The slow but incremental drip of supply was always a risk these cards carried.
