Is the rookie card effect real?

I don’t think the rookie effect is real in pokemon. There’s no indicator on the cards that a particular artwork is the “first appearance” of that Pokemon and often it takes a bit of research to even figure it out. The fact that the japanese version will virtually always be the truest rookie card also complicates things. I would say in all of pokemon, a “rookie premium” is the exception and not the rule. But people in Pokemon, like all collectibles, do value “firsts”. First edition, first print…
