Hi all! Love discussion into card arts and why people love certain cards in general.
X/Y has to be one of the most popular TCG generations barring WOTC/SWSH/current, but garners less discussion than many others! Really looking forward to hearing everyone’s opinions. You can base it on anything - arts you like, cards that just resonate or hold sentimental meaning, etc.
Xerneas has to be my favorite legendary aesthetically. One of the most regal looking in my opinion, and I love how absurdly powerful he was in the competitive ladder back in the day. This card does a great job capturing some of that regality, vitality, and vibrance that i associate with Xerneas. The texturing - like all X/Y era cards - is also absolutely fantastic.
What a card. I think very few cards to me express the sheer power of a Pokemon as well as this one. The texturing - again - is just incredible, some of the best I’ve ever seen on a card. Gold Start and Rayquaza 194 are both awesome, but this is the best card of the Pokemon in my opinion.
A card I appreciate from afar. Absolutely fantastic stylized art evoking old Chinese artwork that I’ve seen before. A little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t even notice Venusaur there the first few times I saw this artwork, but that’s a credit to how incredibly well Charizard has been designed here. One of the most unique artworks of a classic.
Absolutely amazing illustration by Kusube. Love how different it is from most Pokemon cards, and so immediately draws me into what seems like a scene right out of an Enid Blyton storybook. The Talonflame line also holds a special place for me as Pokemon I would use throughout my time with the game, from finishing the campaign to online battles.
Honorable mentions: All the Radiant collection honestly, along with the awesome Pikachu Promo, both Yveltal EXs, the full Alakazam EX, etc.
arent the RC25 cards from Black and White, and RC 32 from XY? I’m pretty sure there is no English equilivant for that Charizard which is unfortunate. My kids got into Pokemon toward the end of Black and White so XY - Sun and Moon is really the meat of our collection. I always really liked the Malamar 115 Full Art, that Golden M Rayquazza is fantastic, and I like the Primal Groudon as well, going to have to throw in the Primal Kyopgre as well. The gold just pops off those cards wonderfully. Ancient Origins has some great cards. M Houndoom EX full art is great, as are both Mewtwo Full arts from Breakthrough . I’m a sucker for goldens, So I also like the Mewtwo Secret Rares, as well as The Gyarados, although I traded that one away a long time ago. M Altaria EX #121 from Fates Collide. All the Gengars from Phantom Forces, and pulling that Silver Dialga from a pack makes me have a soft spot for it. The Xeroic full art I always thought was very cool. The full art Rayquaza’s from Roaring Skies are nice. There really isnt much to dislike about the full arts from XY, there are alot of good ones. Its nice to get so many colors after being confined to alot of Blue for Plasma Bast, Storm, Freeze. lol, almost forgot this is a top 5, ok.

Don’t apologize! That’s a super cool setup!! 3/5 of my top 5’s are in there, haha! The other two are Mega Gardevoir EX, RC31 and Mega Altaria as said above.
What sticks out to me about XY is the full arts. It’s no secret that I loathe the format but they managed to do something with it here. That said, there’s no consistency. A generally abysmal era with a few homeruns that are unique to it. There are few blister holos and promos with cosmos, not the right cosmos, and fewer still that are any good. The foil used on regular set cards is the worst it’s ever been.
I love this sentence. It just goes to show how opinions shift, or how much Pokémon has changed.
The XY art was hated on for a long time. The only cards that got any love at all were your, and my favourites; the Gold cards. But now a lot of people appreciate it, and they should. It is a very distinct era.
I’ve always thought Palkia XY75, Zekrom XY76, and Latios XY79 were really cool together and I like the art style.
Aggron got his first full art in Primal Clash, and that’s one of my favorite cards for sure, I wasn’t into collecting cards specifically at the time when that card came out but when I saw it I bought one right away. Lots of full arts in XY that I like, Rayquaza EX 104/108 from Roaring Skies is cool and so is Altaria EX 123/124 from Fates Collide.
Generations Radiant Collection being XY feels like a cheat code to this question for me
Nearly complete with my goal of completing all of the half arts from the Generations and Legendary Treasures Radiant Collection(s). I’ve scoped out completing the full arts due to price, but have still managed to obtain a couple of them
