Welcome, @pocketmonsterdan ! Glad to have you here.
Welcome @pocketmonsterdan . Super cool to have you here. Would love to see your art sometime and also your collection. More of Japanese promos is always nice.
Enjoy your time here.
Cheers!
Love to see more collectors getting in to vintage Japanese promos, thatâs the sector I pivoted towards in the last year.
I also got back in to Pokémon in 2009, but the first time it even occurred to me that Pokémon was still a thing that existed out there in the world was in 2007. Someone at school who I was friends with and thought was really cool asked if I wanted to split a booster box with him. I had no idea what that was, but I agreed because a cool guy was asking me to participate in something and that was an easy yes. We opened a bunch of Secret Wonders packs together. At the time, I was really underwhelmed by the activity. All the art was CG. I hated that.
In retrospect, Secret Wonders is a pretty set. But I had one of those âthey sure donât make them like they used to!â moments when I saw all those cards with CGI models for the first time.
Welcome to the forum! Hope to see you in some JP promo threads.
Welcome to the forums!
Great choice of collecting interest in my opinion tons of great cards in the vintage Japanese and Japanese exclusive categories. Looking forward to seeing what you start to gather up! What kind of artwork do you do?
Ahh yes, I recall that era of Diamond and Pearl. I do look back on it fondly now, but luckily I got in right before Heart Gold Soul Silver, which still has some of my favourite set artwork
Thanks @camrok37 !
Definitely have a soft spot for Japanese cards. The combination of the artwork, unique release stories, and the nostalgia around the order ones. Definitely look forward to sharing more and see what the rest of the community is up to.
I mostly do comic/manga related artwork. Creating and collecting comics/mangas is my biggest hobby next to Pokemon. I share most my artwork on my non-pokemon related instagram account, though I might explore doing more Pokemon related stuff in the future. Here is piece I did a few months ago for a friends birthday
Thanks @Dyl !
Unfortunately I have not done too much Pokemon related artwork, I mostly do comic book stuff, but here is quick Gengar I did for my profile pic (inspired by the Masaki Gengar promo)
Thanks @mrbubbles , look forward to sharing my collection and hopefully some Pokemon artwork soon. Also looking forward to see what others collect and learning from the community!
Thanks @xileets !
This is so cool! The Gengar Masaki promo is 10/10 in my book. I look forward to seeing more of your art and collection.
Hey everyone!
My name is Hayden and Iâm from LA but currently finishing up grad school in NYC. I previously operated an eBay shop focused on cards / Lego / GameBoy games (2007-13, my momâs account) and then started my own (2013-18). I fell out of the hobby when I started college but graduating soon, have a disposable income, and getting really back into collecting.
My current collection goals are to gather WOTC holo bulk (50+ of every unlimited card DMG-LP â will post a WTB post-holidays!), complete a graded set of Vending (over 60% done), and flesh out my artist autograph collection. My favorite card of all time is either the 1998 Trade Please Holo Back or the 1999 Masaki Promo Gengar.
I joined E4 back in 2018 but trying to get more involved in the community now (I donât have a single friend involved in the hobby so donât really get to talk about it much). I did CS in undergrad and now Iâm working on automating portions of my collection (listing discovery on non-eBay markets referencing a buy list, automated bid sniping, inventory management, price prediction models, etc.). I aim to open-source these tools (100% free on GitHub, not trying to sell anything) once I clean them up and perfect the UX.
Anyways, super excited to be here and dive deeper into the hobby / community!
Welcome/welcome back! Great choices for your favorite cards
If youâre happy to do unpaid programming grunt work then please message me LOLđ
I mean you canât go wrong with pre-2000s Japanese promos / exclusives⊠all of them have the best artwork in the TCG. Especially some of the Vending series 3 artwork. What are yours?
Welcome to the fourum, @hcd ! Youâve got great taste in favorites, IMO, and always nice to meet other tech nerds in the hobby. Best of luck in your renewed collectorâs spirit.
Agree! I really do love the vintage Japanese cards, and the holo back on the Trade Please is pretty cool and unique to me. I have it in a CGC 9, been meaning to move to a 10 at some point but have shifted my collecting goals around somewhat sporadically lately.
Iâm not sure I can point to a single favorite card. From vintage Japanese specifically, if not the Trade Please card, I also really like the JR Stamp Rally Surfing Pikachu; the art is simple but I like how it incorporates the elements of the event it was released for into the actual card as well as the method by which it had to be obtained. For more modern cards, I love the Munch/Scream Psyduck
I sold my only PSA 10 a while back :-(. Now I have a bunch of PSA 6-9s and LP-DMG raw copies. Need to get it back someday.
The Surfing Pikachu is a classic â I actually just purchased the Flying Pikachu (plane on left) promo this week so finally finished my collection of that art-style (Aoki I think) of Pikachu. I hadnât actually heard about the event it was from but I feel a lot of the 1996-99 promos have really interesting origins which make them fun to collect.
I havenât actually picked up any of the Munch cards yet but they are some of the coolest cards Iâve seen!
Long time lurker, and first time poster! Hopefully 2023 will be a good year for collecting, as Iâm getting back into Pokemon as an adult and expanding my childhood Gengar collection!
Welcome to e4, @g3ngar!
