I’m not up to date on booster box values, mostly since I never expect to own one, but a reddit user asked about what a wotc base set case would be worth. I dont want to steer them wrong, so i advised it was above my expertise but figured I’d ask over here to get some actual answers from people who have them and buy them. Information is to assume unlimited version, bought in 2000, seal tape intact.
One argument for not offering a premium is because the outside of a case doesn’t have Pokémon branding. There’s nothing really cool or unique unlike, let’s say, a case of theme decks (10 deck display thing). There’s no real value in this beyond the value of the 6 boxes.
To further that. Base isn’t a per-case set. Gold stars, for example, have an expected pull ratio associated with the case. Therefore, I imagine there is more value in getting a sealed case and knowing that there are probably 2-3 gold stars rather than getting 6 loose boxes that may be the dud ones from other cases. I don’t think anyone gives enough of a shit about ex era to optimize that (no offense ex fans) but that’s my perspective. One Base box is basically indistinguishable from the next; they all have the same probability of having the cards you want.
For these reasons, I don’t think there’s too much of a premium outside of box price times 6, but I could be wrong.
So you’re worried about fake booster boxes but not fake cases?
It looks like it would be beyond easy to replicate the label. Just print it from a printer with a low amount of ink remaining in the toner cart and it will look 20 years old.
Plus, the case is more expensive. There’s more motive to fake it and it’s easier to fake.
Well you’d still have to open the case of course, or at least one side of it to see the boxes. Also the boxes inside should be in mint condition. Yes there should be a premium 1000%.
I was also hoping to hear if anyone had experience with WOTC cases and could let us know if there are ways to point to authenticity, dont need to disclose them, just if there are ways large sellers (Assuming auction sites) could use to verify authenticity. Like I said, it isnt like I would be buying it, but figured there really arent many cases out there.
The premium he’s referring to in this case isn’t the seal of the brown box, it’s that given the case is actually legitimately sealed, you have 6 all-but-guaranteed legit* mint boxes. If you could pay X amount for 6 random boxes off eBay or that same X amount for a (presumably) sealed case, you’d choose the case every time. Hence the premium.
Gary opened up one flap to confirm the authenticity of his 1st ed case so it’s confirmed legit and also still semi sealed which could be an option for this
