I did some searching on the forums and it seems like some people had doubts about how real these cards were. Seeing as I could theoretically make my own gold stamp and stamp the existing non-promo copies as well to “make” these, were there any other sources to read? @smpratte mentioned there was a thread where these were discussed in more detail but I think it’s either hidden or I suck at searching.
@dreamtech@casual There is probably a fold in the black cloth the seller put them on below the Piplup. I usually put my cards on the bed to take photos, and it sometimes happens as well when a card is on top of a fold. I usually redo the photos after ensuring everything is flat, though.
One thing that does concern me however: the Piplup seems non-Holo. I’m pretty sure only the Munchlax was non-Holo and the Piplup and Turtwig were Holofoil:
But not too much is known about these cards, so maybe the pictures above are incorrect and the brief information someone once added to Bulbapedia about these is incorrect as well. Or maybe the eBay auction you linked contains a Holofoil Piplup after all, but it’s simply not visible on the pictures…
All I know is that they were given at the TPCi meetings in the USA, each stamp indicating the year and place the meeting took place. Since these were given to TPCi employees only, I would consider them as unofficial cards, similar as the Rotom and Pikachu cards given at Ishihara’s 60th and 61st birthdays or the Doug Ferguson jumbo. Cool cards given their assumingly low printing numbers, but never intended to be actually released to the public.
@mattytommo Haha, up to you. I personally have split my Pikachu collection into official and unofficial releases, where my main focus are the official releases, although I do still want the unofficial ones as well. But I would indeed consider a master set all official releases only. Otherwise you’ll also have to find every single Matchprint card of which most only have two copies if you’re going for an Expedition Base Set master set for example.
But again, it’s all up to you and your own collection goals.
Well if you have the piplup and don’t want it, you are welcome to hit me up and I’ll buy it from you
This card haunts my dreams… it will for sure be the hardest piplup to obtain and definitely the most expensive compared to the others which cost under $100
They look nice. I personally love promo’s old and modern. Sets everyone looks at them everyone knows whats in them i guess in the future people will focus more on promo’s and build the market.
The Munchlax and Piplup of the three available Distributor promos. If you scroll up a bit, you can see pictures of them (of different copies than the ones Matt bought).
My advice would be don’t get attached to these cards. These cards were given to those who attended the TPCi USA Distribution Meetings.
It is alleged that the Munchlax has only 6 copies in existence.
I am currently trying to track down every Piplup copy and am inclined to say there are more than 6 copies. Once I have more information I will be making a longer thread.
@smpratte also has the same theory and has been consistent in his skepticism over the cards.
Would love to own a copy one day, but— some things aren’t meant to be.
