If the grade of the card is 6 or less as it should be given that damage you are going to likely have no recourse. That being said it still couldn’t hurt to call PSA and show them. Perhaps they will agree it was caused by snap damage or somewhere else along the line.
I mean, I’ll be the first to say I’ve sent in cards that I thought were “Gem Mint” or PSA 10 worthy, swore I looked them over, sent them and got them back a 6. Only to later come to the conclusion that I missed the indents or damage on the card.
It’s a hard pill to swallow, but sometimes it just is that, and you can’t blame anyone but yourself (even if you were %99 sure you had looked it over, that 1% is still there and gets ya)
I’d make a call and explain the situation. They might accept the claim and they might not, but you have nothing to lose from making the call. You have no proof and so no bounds to make a claim as it’s your word against theirs. PSA gets calls from people like you upset about their grades all the time… So like any service industry they’re more likely to lubricate the gears if you’re calm, polite and above all else respectful. I wouldn’t even mention what you think it is if I were you as it’s somewhat irrelevant at this point.
Like Scott said, that is not from a ruler. It is not from a case either.
So what is it?
Either you overlooked it
Or
A PSA employee grabbed something and dug it into both sides of the bottom of the card.
Oh…you thought they used the ruler on the back. No, they did not. That card seems well centered so no reason to double check with a ruler.
I’ve actually got notification from PSA that they did do this and I got a voucher. It is tricky to say for sure whether it was PSA or the crimping in the packs. Does this mean there hasn’t been a sloppy case sealing? No. However, without a picture or scan from before it’s hard to tell where the human error lies.
Well after doing some measurements in photoshop it definitely does not seem like it was 10 worthy due to the centering. I’m getting 62/38 for centering on the front, which would immediately knock it down to a 9 at the most. Perhaps the miniscule white printing specks (~3?) on the back corners knocked it further down to the 8. There’s also a little tiny dirt mark near the left center of the Pokeball…not sure what’s going there as the rest of the surface is flawless…either that got trapped in the casing part during encapsulation or I overlooked that. It does seem it was given a grade 8 before any damage was incurred - I really don’t think a grader would give this card an 8 with two huge indents like that. Here’s some pics for you guys to check out yourself:
That card is not a PSA 8 by definition. I would start with an e-mail with the indent showing photos and just bring up in a polite way your concern with the grade. You can also mention the fact that you don’t believe the damage was there to begin with, but I would not throw around huge accusations that they damaged it.
Fact is it was either overlooked by yourself AND two professional graders…
Or it was an onsite damage at PSA after grading but before/during encapsulation. Lucky you, I think you should have a financial guarantee of grade/authenticity on your hands. Whether or not it was the combined oversight of 3 people 2 being professionals or whether it was damage by 1 PSA employee who handles likely thousands of cards per day is moot.
If you look at where the dents are, and the length of them it’s hard to see how the case could cause it. The line would have to be longer, all the way across and not near the tip. Can you picture that?
I can’t really follow what you’re saying, but I’ve had multiple cards return where the card was crushed between the slots that typically hold it in place, where the card was still in between those pieces of plastic.
It looks relatively consistent with what I’m seeing here.
Just an update, I contacted PSA customer support, sent in my card for review (PSA 8 shadowless with damage) and after a month received a phone call this morning. They agreed that the damage did look like encapsulation damage and offered to either comp my current orders and issue me a check for the remaining amount or give me a $500 voucher. I took the voucher Sadly I’ll lose out on the future increase in value that a PSA 8 has over a PSA 5, but still much better than nothing.
So, do you think that the original grader took that dent into consideration on giving the card an 8, or do you think that is the best grade it could receive without the dent?
I don’t think it’s possible to have a dent and receive an 8 - it appears that’s the grade it received originally. I still thought that was a bit weird, it’s definitely off center enough to warrant a 9, but I’m not sure what knocked it down to an 8.
@Nysyr said:So is the voucher basically X free submissions? Were other options presented?

From my understanding, it’s basically a $500 gift card to be used on PSA services. The other option they presented me was to cover my current submissions (~36 cards, ~$360 or so) and then send me a check for the rest (up to a value of $450). Those submissions were paid by someone else though as they were a birthday present, so I took the voucher instead.
It was kind of funny at the beginning of the call though - she originally started off with a valuation of $100 for the PSA 8 Shadowless Charizard, but she let that go pretty quickly once I started looking up some sold ebay listings.
