Tropical Collection (Hello e4)

First post here. I’ve had these for awhile but never shared. This is part of my tropical/worlds promo collection. It was quite a journey putting this together and I got to visit different places and meet new people. I love me some 1st Edition Base Set but to me, these will always be the best cards ever made!

I’ll post some more if I have time and if people are interested!

Not surprisingly, the last card I got to complete the set was the Tropical Breeze (a card I had written off previously as impossible, especially because it often comes with the complete deck which was completely out of reach). It was quite a story and I still don’t really understand how it actually happened or believe it. I’ll share the story eventually, but for now I’ll share this artwork I got commissioned to celebrate Tropical Breeze and completing the set. The artwork was actually done by @ShiriusuSutaa (highly recommend!)

The idea was that the chill Psyduck represents appreciation for the collections we already have and being content, while the Pikachu represents the spirit of collecting and how our collections are always changing and never “finished”. I just gave that description and @ShiriusuSutaa nailed it!

A welcome to you, and a great epic first post. This is how you make a splash!

I really like cards with a story, and so I’m excited to get story times in the future about the journey.

The Tropical cards always bothered me a little for one reason, they are black star promos(sometimes). I don’t like it when cards with such in person release requirements are numbered black star promos. I still haven’t decided if I should leave gaps in my binders for them, and doodle my own pictures, or to close the gaps and pretend they aren’t numbered promos. I think you are qualified to solve the quandary.

I’m a big fan of people who compete getting special cards though. I think commemorating it is super valuable. A time and a place commemorated through awarding special mementos to those who attended. It makes me a little melancholy when people choose to sell these cards instead of keep them for themselves. However I’m always happy when they end up with people who cherish them. I can tell it means a lot to you to have found these. A difficult niche for sure, and one that I will enjoy through others.

I haven’t really thought about it that deeply (about worlds promos being numbered), but I can see how that could be annoying if trying to complete a set for sure!

As far as the competitors selling them, yea… the sentiment of being able to keep them is nice, and I also think to be able to do so without worrying about the money is definitely a privilege. Besides that, I know a lot of competitors cherish the memories of attending/competing and the heat of competition moreso than the material prizes. Even for myself, the story and journey of obtaining these cards is as valuable to me as the cards themselves (corny, but true). I like the continuity of this set and I feel like no other items encapsulate and summarize the history of competitive Pokemon TCG better than this set. I’ve always been drawn to competitive side of Pokemon cards and the lore (easy to forget that it’s an actual game sometimes ). I used to read metagame articles, tournament recaps, and deck lists, dating all the way back to the days of Haymaker and Rain Dance!

yup. The cards given to competitors is kind of a limbo. I only care that the competitors have cherished memories. Inevitably some people will go to any event and have a bad experience. So that is the real travesty. So I’m glad you have gathered these. That’s the most insane thing. And I am shocked you were one of the people going super serious on competitive use of the cards. I was just a dumb kid who got my butt handed to me by hitmonchan and didn’t use it because I didn’t like hitmonchan. The folly of youth. I hope to see anything else you choose to share in the future.

Yup, ironically I never actually played competitively myself. I only played with my friends and we had made-up rules. But in general, competition is what excites me. I liked the idea of it, and it influences a lot of my decisions, whether it’s collecting Pokemon or what games I used to play growing up.
