Tracking Value beyond spreadsheets

Once upon a time before Covid someone in here was creating a website/user interface where you could use dropdowns to select Japanese/English, Set/Promo, then Card Grade to build your 'portfolio" of cards you owned. The idea would be that the website would scrape sales data from websites like Ebay periodically and update the total value of your collection. I always thought this was an amazing idea but the website didn’t really work back when it dropped. Was there ever any improvement? Was it an abandoned project? Are we stuck just guessing/wasting time building excel spreadsheets and manually updating after periodically looking at sales history? Really would be a godsend if someone created that application and made it work properly. I feel like people would pay a fee to build their collection in something like that for easy management/tracking.

I thought about this a while ago

pokedata does that, have to get a premium subscription to track multiple portfolios and other QoL features. It’s a huge project and even pokedata frequently misprices cards just because there is so much to cover.

I’m a web designer and would be super down to help build a free user tool though, just need a chill developer to work with.

Is it just set cards or does it include stuff like prize and promo/trophy stuff? Does it built the port by slab/grade or what?

The PSA set registry does an ok job but obviously only works with PSA cards. I don’t think an ideal solution exists.

not sure if they have trophy, mostly set stuff. You can check sales by raw/slabbed

right, I think there is an opportunity to create that solution. But probably a large barrier to entry since there are already a lot of apps out there that fail to perfectly capture the value of all cards

someone must build us a viable solution :frowning:

Not it

i’ll do it, I’m sick of spreadsheets
despite how much I love spreadsheets, just don’t want to manually enter prices every month for the rest of my life

@TCGFish

Do you have an interest in expanding toward this direction?

We need one with the big 3 slab companies. CGC PSA TAG

Bank roll it mr. worldwide

We should have one of the smaller slab companies like SGC or Beckett bankroll it so they can be included in the dropdowns

Psa > cgc > beckett > sgc > tag

If CGC could surpass Beckett so quickly, I’m sure Tag can too. Its a shame BGS doesn’t really take themselves seriously. They have nice slabs. But yeah have one of these smaller companies bankroll it to be included

We’ve made some changes in the last couple months to increase the accuracy of our data. It’s an ongoing job, but we’re confident that we’ll be the first to do it correctly

Think he mentioned on Discord that TCGFish was acquired by CGC’s parent company but he’s still the developer.

As for the main question, there are many competing sites/apps trying to do it at the moment but I don’t know how big the demo is for that vs those just buying raw cards.

The problem with any specific slab company trying to build this out is they usually want to leave the other slab companies out of the mix which makes the product completely useless to 90% of collectors who own cards in various slabs. We want a comprehensive portfolio of our cards that we can track value and trends over time. Also @pokedata were you the one with the original UI with the dropdowns to all the sets to select from? Main issue back then was the prices were wildly inaccurate and not updated, also I don’t remember if you could pick the grade/slab company or not? Also it was only set cards and a lot of people here own promo/prize/trophy as well. Can you link to what you’re talking about now? If you have a tool I’d love to check it out.

Their website is literally the name pokedata and it is primarily set cards. Most of these sites build out from TCGPlayer and then add in eBay scraping and TCGFish also started to take in PWCC and some other auction sites.

Not that they can’t add trophies etc in time but for all the bluster about them, there is no user friendly database tracking any of the high end cards. Their relatively low pop also restricts how many people would be able to acquire them and then care to track them on these sites. So I would think the demo is just not big enough to cater to as a primary target and there is a lot more to do on the data side since there is no easy repository to use. I’ve read many a complaint here about Bulbapedia being inaccurate with information on these cards but still no one cares to correct or update, so it’s sort of a self-induced problem as well.

But obviously since I don’t work on any of them, this reasoning may be incorrect. It just seems logical.
