Hello Everyone,
I wanted to share my collecting direction here. Im excited about my plans, and don’t know any people IRL that would care to listen to me nerd out about Pokemon, so I am grateful for anyone that takes the time to read this.
I’m building in a niche subset that hasn’t really been “discovered” yet, Topps Series 3. I’m doing it mostly out of nostalgia, but also because I think that the popularity of the chrome series (Tekno & Sparkle) could have a trickle down effect, as well as 90s vibes.
What drew me into Series 3 initially was actually not the data, but the way that Flareon looked in the rainbow foil. I was starting a Spectra Chrome build, when I stumbled across the card. I was awestruck by the Flareon card, and looked up the rest of the lineup. The birds and the Eeveelutions really stood out and felt like I had to own them. I decided to abandon my spectra plans, and shift exclusively towards series 3
My build started off in the rainbow foil, but quickly realized there simply wouldn’t be the availability that I need to finish a build. I decided to just focus on the core (birds, eeveelutions, dragons, mews) I soon noticed that the “silver” foil was also quite rare. I looked up the prices and saw that most 9s could be acquired for less than $100.
About halfway through my silver build, I saw the Logan Paul card on Goldin. While looking through the site, I noticed that there were several other auctions going on for different card sets. One of them was the fossil set, in matching PSA 9.
Which gave me an idea; hold these cards for 5-10 years, and sell a set of matching nines as a bundle one day, IF the niche ever takes off.
I don’t know if I’ll have the strength (or card availability) to finish the rainbow the way that I’d like, so think I am just going to focus on building “mini sets” to sell to someone that wants to try and build an elite rainbow set.
In all reality, im sure Topps will never be mainstream - so I know that these cards might never take off, and that Goldin might be a pipe dream - but i am having so much fun, that I’m not sure that part matters as much as having the cards!
I’m still a few nines away from completing my silver foil lineup, but have really enjoyed building a set instead of buying a bunch of promos! Super excited to finish this thing off. After that I’m done…I swear:joy: Thanks for reading
Comments, suggestions, and criticism is welcomed
I’d also love to hear from other set builders! We’ve all got a different obsession and passion within this space, so would love to hear about your overall direction as well!
