If Marty Mcfly leant you his Delorean for a week, what era of the TCG would you go back and visit?
I would go back to 1999 and enjoy all the Pokemaina that was going on at the time. I would record as much video and take as many pictures as I could of events and just try to capture the feeling of that time.
I would have so much fun collecting and opening base set minty fresh packs at cost. I would pack that Delorean to the brim with sealed booster boxes, Charizards, and as much other cool stuff as I could find.
I would really enjoy playing the TCG at that time, before so many cards came out.
Well seeing that in the third movie the DeLorean was totaled by a train Iād need to Doc to lend me his steam train to travel back in time.
Seeing in this universe Iād travel back to the first anime reel produced in 1917 and start from there. If we use 12 monkeyās time travel logic my body wonāt age at the rate itās naturally supposed to and Iāll live throughout japan over the century collecting all of these historic anime pieces and drop them back to my current day self where itās all stored in an underground warehouse along with more money than I could ever use.
For the members on this forum who werenāt born yet at that time or simply were too young to remember it, that year defined an entire generation and is something we will probably never see again in our lifetimes.
I still remember being in my local card shop as a little kid back then and a guy saw a Base Set Charizard for sale and said, āFifty dollars for a card?ā Lol. If only he saw the prices now.
I would go back to 2001 at the start of Neo Revelation. At the time, multiple stores had English & Japanese sets all from Base 1st to current. Iād horde a bunch of material and bring it back. Newbury Comics was a treasure trove of English and Japanese stuff including promos, folders, old Japanese packs, and extra memorabilia!
I know this isnāt meant to be a serious topic, but Iāll answer seriously.
The first reaction is to go back and make bets on sporting outcomes, stock investments, investments in general etc. Obviously to make yourself very wealthy which is all well and good. But for me thatād be a recipe for disaster because the more you do it the more famous and wealthy you get, then you get investigated, files get created on you, someone is going to eventually find out that something fishy is occurring and then all hell breaks loose.
The correct choice would be to pick and choose VERY carefully where you make your money and which investments to make. Put 1000 dollars into that up and coming business you know is going to be huge instead of 100,000, donāt touch sports betting at all because itās fraught with fixing and match throwing. Do just well enough to make sure you never have to āworkā again, and so that you can do most things whenever you want without being the guy that owns those things.
If we are talking pokemon I would go back and visit some poke days. As kid/teenager I always thought I was to cool for this stuff. But now I see how much fun it would have been. Especially in Germany, they were so unique and you could get Pokemon and Cards you couldnāt get anywhere else in the early 2000s
Summer 2003 to buy all WotC boxes I could find. Perhaps not the Base ones because of all the time travelers who have gone to 1999.
But there will be more than enough other nice stuff left in 2003ā¦
Iād go back to 2008 and tell myself to not give up on pokemon just because the cards look different. I played Pearl version for over a year and loved it, but shortly thereafter my love for the hobby died.
Rumor has it if you sing āif I could turn back timeā chorus by Cher three times into the mirror at 3am with the lights off and 4 pine cented candles lit, it sometimes opens up a portal to go back in the day.
If I could go back Iād go back to when legendary collection came out so I could focus on heavily collecting reverse holos. So whatās that 2002? I absolutely love reverse holoās (of all sets, not just LC) so I would have started collecting them with that set and never stopped!
If we got to keep the knowledge of what sealed product is worth now, yeah I would hoard tons of it. But if we simply just got to go back I would just be opening packs like mad and hopefully take real nice care of the reverses I pulled!
I would grab some spyglasses and go back to the early 90s and apply for a job at Wizards of the Coast; We still have a lot of gaps of info to fill inā¦
Moving aside the fact that time travel to the past is hopelessly improbable, First I would travel back in time and befriend multiple high level WOTC employees. Then I would have them alert me if they print any printing errors (Iām thinking of the inverted WB promo cards, possibly too the infamous prerelease raichu). Next I would offer to buy their print sheets at whatever cost they ask, I wouldnāt steal it like that prick in the Netherlands with the gold stars. After I would grade as much I can. Then I would bury the cards in a safe in a remote area and forget about it. Only to remember about it 2 decades later when rumors start to emerge about some error cards that the public as never seen before (WB inverted promo). And slowly reveal one out of the four set every few years (thatās if I still remember the code or still have the key, if not then they are gone forever).
I would go back to the ex-era, but with the money situation I have today Back in the day I used all my pocket money to buy a few boosters (I was a teenager) but today I could buy much more if prices were the same as back then. Also Iāve never opened a pack of the earliest ex-sets in English (Ruby Sapphire - up to Hidden Legends) so I would open some of those as well. Iāve opened a few Spanish Ruby & Sapphire packs though.
And I never pulled a Gold Star from a pack so I would love to experience that. I also love the reverse holos from the era. I just love everything about ex-era ok?
