Thoughts & expectations on the new upcoming set “Destined Rivals”

So with Poke beach announcing the new upcoming set “Destined Rivals” what are your thoughts or expectations for this set?

-Are we upset it won’t be a stand alone rocket set?
-what do we think will be the big chase?
-do we think it will be a hell storm like prismatic?

Any and all input is welcome and I’m not sure if a post in regard to this has been made already but figured it’s a good conversation point.

Look forward to hearing everyone’s and alls thoughts and inputs.

Regards,
N :v:t3:

I expect to not see any of this in stores and I will try to snag some online but will have no luck.
Other than that I am looking forward to this set.

it was never going to be a rocket set.

I’m quite happy to get more ho-oh. At some point it feels like ho-oh lost popularity against lugia. But I always really liked them both. But ho-oh deserves a pretty special art. So we will see.

Either way, I’m kind of stoked that I get a chance to act out the pokemon gold version experience in the tcg with Ethan’s pokemon. Shame they chose that name over gold. But still, I love the character design, and already his pokemon are several of which I used. Shockingly my team was at different points very fire type heavy. I picked cyndaquil, and I really did have magcargo on my team, and since I played gold version, I got ho-oh first. I’m crossing my fingers that an ethan deck is viable with pokemon I used in the video games.

Not much else to say yet. Very early.

It’s set well within expectations for English modern. Japan makes too many sets and TPCi has to combine them no matter what. Modern visits nostalgia-driven concepts, but they will never bring back the same sets

Theme aside, Garchomp, Mewtwo and Ho-Oh are strong contenders for chase cards. Battle Partners catered very well to Japanese fans, and this two-in-one will be more versatile globally

If you wanted a set with identity close to Japan, only the special sets do that (151, Shrouded Fable, Prismatic Evolutions) because they are usually based on 1 JP subset expansion. BW dual sets Black Bolt & White Flare are looking to be the next 151 style of set

If Battle Partners is any indication for main expansions going forward in 2025, I’d wager only a third of SV10 The Glory of Team Rocket is actually Rocket’s Pokémon and the rest are filler. The Rocket’s mechanic will be dabbled with once

Also, given the lack of authenticity with unconfirmed cards and preliminary info in today’s world, this ‘leaked’ image from a while back might have been fabricated after all

Destined Rivals has very good potential to be most interesting regular set which gen 9 has offered to us, by this day that title has belonged to Temporal Forces but that’s just my opinion.

Gen 2 fan inside me is overjoyed seeing the focus is on many events/characters of Johto games.

My wishlist for contents:

  • stunning SAR for Ho-oh ex, Rocket’s Mewtwo ex and many others
  • Pichu AR
  • no Tera ex’s
  • TPC can we finally have Lt. Surge FA?

I would be SUPER dissappointed if they just copypaste the ExTRR Rocket’s Mewtwo and not make a new one… That isn’t a card that should be reprinted.

I’m certain it’s going to be a new ex for Rocket’s Mewtwo. Misty’s Gyarados is in SV9a Heat Wave Arena and is a completely different card from Misty’s Gyarados in Gym Challenge / Gym 1 Leaders’ Stadium

Fun fact: the new Misty’s Gyarados is using Misty’s sprite from FireRed & LeafGreen

I’m pretty bummed to hear that it’s not a standalone Rocket set. I find most modern sets uninteresting due to the lack of set identity and was actually looking forward to this one. I’ll hold my judgment until we know the final set list but I’m significantly less excited about it

Most likely that because there’s so much attachment to popular nostalgic concepts, we never really acknowledged that TPC may want to create a unique and different experience with them for the newest generation. Most of the early info about these sets is almost always incomplete, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, Destined Rivals may still be exciting for casual or new collectors as they’re more willing to accept the modern definition of ‘set identity’ in favour of potentially great artwork
