Yes I would still collect. In this alternate reality, people would get very competitive with quantity over quality. Collections would be be in massive storage warehouses. You could create furniture and decorations of your favorite cards. And people would fight for the leader board of Top 10 largest collections… Eventually someone would become the first person with a billion cards!
I would definitely still collect, as others have said the nostalgia would still be there and it would be awesome to finish binder sets of old stuff and focus on just modern!
Does no one think that PSA/BGS/CGC cert numbers that preceded this event would become very valuable but anything ungraded/new cert numbers may be near worthless. Due to “old” cert numbers being “officially released” cards.
The new chase wouldn’t be to collect one of each Pokemon card, but to have every copy of one specific card. Instead of a cute binder with a full set, we’d be flexing our basements completely stacked with millions of copies of one specific card to be able to control the market for this card.
Of course, it’s impossible to avoid the anger of value loss, but I’d be stoked that I could own every card I want.
I feel that the collector spirit is still strong for us due to the nostalgia value. So while the chase may be gone, our history with the art and feel of the cards isn’t. Plus, I still buy cards that are easy to buy, cards that have tons of copies easily available. It wouldn’t be something to write home about anymore, but it would be something to enjoy for the personal value it holds.
I would still buy cards but I agree with Quuador that it wouldn’t really be collecting anymore. I would just buy: a complete set of every set up to around the B&W era, Japanese exclusive artwork that interest me up to the same point and 1 of each trophy and be done. Would definitely be nice having them to look at but there would be no real story behind them or attachment due to how easy they were to obtain. The process of buying would feel more like a checklist/chore compared to now where there are certain cards I really want but I have to work out the best way to buy based on my budget.
Trophy Khan… yeah there would be upside. And hey, no worries… cause if people are willing to spend 10k on a card now, they’d be willing to spend 10k on 1000 cards then. I think we’d be right back full circle in quick time. Then Gary wouldn’t have to kill himself either.
One day you need to throw out a Willy Wonka-esque contest where people who buy your mystery packs have a chance to win a golden ticket to see all of your Pokemon items.
Well, now that I know Gary wouldn’t be around to protect his collection, I guess I’d make my way over to his place: yeah, I’ll take those haunted Zards; maybe even the MtG stuff.
I would buy the cards where I like the artwork a lot (pretty much what I am doing these days anyway), maybe buy sealed product to open for fun. Would buy a 1st edition Charizard for the meme of it.
I would collect alternative card games with even more determination than I do now.
I sometimes doubt the rarity of the illustrator Due to Pkonno…
Seems like there is better cards to desire, imagine paying 400,000 thinking its the rarest card but meanwhile pkonno could be sitting on 20 more.
Purely outsider speculation, dont behead me for my opinion lol…
Just gives me a bad feeling seeing a lack of integrity in some of the rarest cards and their distribution
300 is a big difference from 39 lol. If there were 300 copies and it became public knowledge, it would definitely hurt the card (even if those 300 copies were very slowly and methodically sold).
