Made to order. Cost $120. Today the contents of this case cost $10,000+ in raw condition, double that in the likely grades right out of the box.
It was not a popular item at the time because it was “$120 for two promos” — a retail sku that people found insulting. Who would buy that?
Is there any missed opportunity as obvious in retrospect as this, though? I wonder how many more of these cards would be available today if the sku retailed for $60 instead.
Post other missed opportunities that keep you up at night.
My biggest misses were just not buying more when I started collecting again. I remember these were on the shelves everywhere:
I have vivid memories of them at blockbuster, yes you read that correctly! I could have never imagined they would be thousands of dollars one day. There was no indicator at that time pokemon was going to grow.
For the 20th Anniversary cards, that was the best Anniversary to date, and I don’t think it is possible to replicate. If you released those cards now, it would be terrible. Van Gogh Pikachu was a preview how a nice promo would work, and that wasn’t rare. Something like the rocket cards or mario pikachu today might cause WW3.
the ex blisters have outperformed ex box growth so much. When I did one of my first trades it was an ex box for a bunch of ex blisters. 3 years later the box has grown by 3-4k and the blisters have grown 4-5x
its the lower barrier of entry limiting growth! Same with box breaks and modern
stuff like that really makes me wonder how the market would react if many more truly wealthy people joined
Eeveeteam said the ponchos already which I agree with, also more broadly my biggest mistake has just been not living in Japan. I remember balking at the munch cards when they were released, jokes on me. Same with the ray poncho pikachu
I would have to say not buying enough ex era 3-pack blisters. I remember buying 12 of them for $20 each back in 2015, then deciding to do this dumb youtube series lol
Ended up pulling a gold star though which then graded a PSA 10. #NoRAGRETZ
I definitely still think about the rocket case. I remember almost buying a listing for both cards graded in a 10 for $600. My husband even gave the okay but I’d never spent so much money on collectibles before, and it felt weird. So I was like…yyyeeeeaa…noo I think I’m okayyy without them
