I am not very familiar with all these considerations …
I have some shadowless cards in 1st edition :
(you can zoom on the picture, the charmander stamp is weird …)
Are my cards normal, thin or thick ?

The base set was the test set for pokemon, which is why it contains the most errors and inconsistencies. Why we even have the distinctions, “shadowless” and “unlimited” is because they decided to give the entire layout an update during the base print run.
The difference in the stamps physical appearance is due to the pressure of the stamp. This is why you have the “thin” darker ink (standard for following sets), “thick” the moderate pressure/ink, and “grey” very light pressure/ink. With this said, It is very unlikely to find a definitive way to prove exactly how many uncommon/common cards were stamped with the “thin” stamp.
Thanks.
So : does my charmander above have a grey stamp (the stamp is in relief unlike the other stamps) ?
i’d say your card all appear to be the standard thick stamp
Agreed.

Silly question perhaps but is it known for certain that the thin/thick stamp variation actually exists from print? I.e. one of them isn’t faked?
Good point.
Also, if there isn’t one already created, we should build a list of every known thin stamp and grey stamp card that is known.
Great idea.
I’ve been digging and digging for these gray stamps since day one. I’ve gone through 1-2 hundred thousand of the 1st base cards over 16 years and always rat holed them.
The only ones I’ve ever given up was a dozen or two to Rusty.

Just to confirm mate, what stamp is the rare one? Is it the thin (which means the 1 is thin yeah?)?

The thin stamp is the rare one if I am understanding correctly. Though, the name is a bit confusing because the stamp itself seems to be laid on thicker.

Wish I understood this better. Saw a whole bunch of these on Facebook. Will need to go find them now.

Good luck! Hopefully they are the thin stamps!

Thin stamp non-holos of course. The thick stamp holos are rarer though especially the MACHAMP.
But don’t confuse any of this as to the rarity of5)3 thin stamp non holos. I’ve only seen three of those.
Pic please?

i’d say your card all appear to be the standard thick stamp
Okay thanks.
So the sort of relief does not matter ?

The plot “thickens” haha.

thats correct, look at the colour of the ink, a grey stamp will be so feint that the ink appears grey instead of black
Ok thanks, so my cards are just normal

Would the two on the right be considered thin stamp? They are both machamp.
Yes, the word “thin” refers to the number “1” in the stamp. The machamp cards on the right are the “thin” variant.
Yes for machamps the thin variant is the more common of the two.
I’m just looking through my friend’s collection and he has a thin stamp holo blastoise. Was it that only the common/uncommon/rare cards are rare in thin stamp? Or is this one valuable too?
thats correct, its the rares/uncommons/commons that are the hard to find ones
