Hello!
I wanted to know if anyone has any pretty specific themes in their colleciton? Not just a specific pokémon a specific set, but something that you like.
I really like the idea of season collections, there are a few nice Christmas themed cards that would go into a winter set.
So, I am on the hunt specifically for Japanese festival themed cards, I only have a few so far:
(I also have the festival lead dipplin but I can’t add more pics!)
Some of them are more festival themed than others, but I’m mostly going for things that have Japanese themes/stalls/festival food, even fireworks!
If anybody has any fun collection, please do share!
Or if you have any festival themed cards, I’d love to know about those as well! Any and all suggestions would be amazing (even ones that are super rare/promos/impossible to get!)
I also picked this one up recently:
But I’m undecided on if I want to give it to my boyfriend, or keep it for myself. I love the temple in the background!
Virtually (in the App) I started a Traditional Japan collection quite similar. There I have added a few cards for the art style. The Pikachu and Cramorant of Mitsuhiro Arita for example. But most of the cards so far are based on festivals, clothing and architecture.
Other ideas:
• Sleepy/sleeping Pokemon
• Cards very likely inspired by Lovecraft (not many so far)
• Cozy cards (Cuddling, nice homes and fireplaces, etc.)
• Founding of your own academy (Plan a curriculum, hire teachers and other staff)
• Pokemon based on Yokai + additional informations about the Yokai
Ive been on the hunt for those sleeves, any of them!
I’ll check all of those cards out, thank you so much for the suggestions!
Edit: I forgot to add, Yes I have the festival grounds card! Honestly that card was one of the reasons I wanted to start the collection, weirdly enough!
GIVE ME MORE HOLIDAY CARDS POKEMON. And I aint talking a set card with a damn pumpkin stamp. I would kill for even just a single promo of an explicity halloween card like this easter pikachu promo.
I think regardless of the original meaning, as a festival/celebration (especially in a country like Japan with less of a christian population) it definitely has evolved past that!
Ironically indonesian, not japanese. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if Japan did do a KFC promo as well considering their dominos promos. Theres also pizza hut and 7/11 promos.
I saw some random posts on IG of people at card shows showing their odd/obscure theme collections. Pokemon lounging on furniture, Pokemon with jobs, and one that stood out to me was cards with food, specifically apples. Apparently there are a surprising amount of cards with apples of all things.
Themed binders are my favorite way of collecting!!! I think coming up with concepts like that is also a great way to be able to participate in the hobby without spending huge amounts of money. I know some people feel like collecting cards is for people with big bucks, since we’re all so used to seeing crazy prices flying around. Sometimes it feels like a good or interesting collection is only judged around rarity or exclusivity, which obviously we all enjoy but I feel like curated themes makes it somehow more soulful and personal.
Best part is, most themes you can come up with will probably have super cool cards that count as bulk and are merely cents or a dollar at most. which I find encouraging for people who are just starting or people that can’t be spending on graded cards, ETBs or whatever.
Heck, if I was a vendor I would probably have themed binders just like this to encourage people to start their own. I just think it’s such a healthy approach to the hobby.
Here’s a couple ones I love (that are particularly cheap/common) from my collection of cards where you can see the moon! (shoutout this thread, it made me feel like I’m not alone :3)
I have also heard of collecting cards that feature food or pokemon eating, or cards where there’s snow. Sports related cards sounds like a fun chase too.
A personal favorite I also heard around the net is, cards where you can see an apple!!!
And yes, I love food themed cards- that’s something I’d look into in the future for sure! The apple theme is so specific but it really works hahaha I love it!
