The Great Loss-Porn Thread

I figured the thread had generally gone to just sharing stories of losses since asking people to share their own major losses in the midst of a bull market extending longer than entire participation in the hobby of the average user is dead on arrival.

Wait I just realized I have the perfect answer for this thread in that it is actually embarrassing to post.

Back in February when everyone was blowing up the Lohgan Paul second box thread that base was sure to skyrocket, I thought well jeez maybe they are on to something. I figured Charizards had been relatively steady, so I could buy one, auction to time a few days after the break, and it would either “stonk”, or go for roughly the same as I paid +/- 10%. With the downside being 10% loss and the upside being the fantastical prices people were envisioning it seemed worthwhile.

I bought a strong psa 8 for $20k, immediately auctioned it, sold for $17.5k. Anyway that’s the last time I’ll try quick flipping expensive cards or listening to e4 investment advice!

I respect this! That was my mindset with quite a few cards and I had the same result. Apparently, I only learn the hard way, haha.

3 WotC boxes (and miscellaneous other sealed stuff) I ordered were opened by customs - they even opened some packs. At the time of the purchase I not only lost out on maybe 30% of the value but I also replaced the boxes which cost even more money and time.

Actually I regret selling things a lot more than buying, aside from these boxes I can´t think of a purchase that I regret.
I sold a MTG Beta Lotus for 600€, full UL set of power for 2000€, duals for 30€ etc etc, probably the reason why I rarely sell anything nowadays.

Idk man, sounds like you’re a genius after that PSA 8 Master Scroll sold for $35k

I feel like every single post you make should come with a disclaimer that you also own a scroll

The only PSA-graded Pichu I’ve ever bought which is currently worth less than I paid is my copy from the Totodile Side Deck which I paid $73.42 for on 19th March 2018. To my knowledge this remains the highest one of those has ever sold for with the last PSA 10 copy selling for just $45 in August last year - more than doubling what the previous copy sold for in March 2020.

To put that into some perspective, that’s $23.42 more than an unlimited PSA 10 Neo Genesis Pichu - which is now a $6,000 card - was selling for back then. Had this scaled up by the same amount as that card it’d now be just short of $9k. But no. It’s a volatile $45.

@pichufan, I can assure you with upmost certainty…

Your Side Deck Pichu is worth more than what you paid.

Overpaid for my PSA 9 Shadowless Blastoise last year. Can’t lose immediate money if your plan is to hold long-term.

Ah yes fellow scroll owner. I do agree that we should mention more often that we ourselves own the Master Scroll.

Of course, who wouldn’t want to be associated with a great Schrodingers Pocket Monster Card that contains every Pokemon and No Pokemon all at once.

Either way I am glad that our friends here in the Pocket Monster Community are starting to understand why it is so special. I look forward to the day when most of my net worth is in my Master Scroll TM. We cannot rest until it reaches one hundred million USD comrades

Owning a scroll is not loss-porn :unamused:

My first POP 5 pack at league had an Umbreon star. It was worth about $15, and so was Crystal Guardians Shiftry ex, which I wanted to play with.

Last October I owned a PSA 10 Unlimited Shining Charizard, but I really wanted a 1st Ed Blaine’s Charizard to complete gym challenge. I had noticed that the prices seemed to track together, so I had a brilliant idea:

  1. I bought a PSA 10 1st Ed Blaine’s Charizard at $11.5k
  2. I sent my shining Charizard to PWCC to sell in the November auction

I knew at the time that the Blaine’s Charizard price was inflated, but I figured things would balance themselves out when my shining Charizard inevitably sold for a new record price. As you all probably guessed, the bubble popped between steps 1 & 2 and I’m out about $5k or so. It’s not financially ruinous and my wallet can take the hit, but my ego is not quite as resilient.

In early November of 2020, I purchased a PSA 9 Corrected Blaine’s Charizard for $4,093.72 CAD. This card last sold for about half of that price.

I had been out of the hobby for well over a year and wasn’t fully aware of the 2020 market. Luckily, I am not in a position where I would have to sell anything from my collection, and PSA recently began recognizing the Corrected Blaine’s Charizard as something other than unlimited.

So there is hope that by the time my grandkids receive my collection they might be able to break even on it for me.

I bought a web series psa 10 gengar holo for $125 and a 1st ed web series psa 10 gengar holo for $150 in 2019. Sold both for $500 together, will be posting more stupid sales later, got to cry in the meantime…

Its not really a loss if youve realized gains. Yea you could of made more, but id hardly call it a “loss.”
