The Grand Gyarados Collection

Ooh, this is a really good question! In the short term, I’d say the Breakpoint/RotBH sets really glowed up on me after hunting down the Unlimited versions. I was underwhelmed by the 3D art originally, but because of the hunt, it’s made me appreciate it so much more. They’re cards that look better in person anyways. :stuck_out_tongue:

I still have a love for Base Set, Neo Revelation, and the Hiroshima/Ancient Origins Promo, but the art that has grown on me the most over the years is Gyarados Delta from Holon Phantoms:

As an overall CARD - the art and card design just go hand-in-hand, probably better than anything else ever conceptualized for me with potential exception to the Hiroshima/Ancient Origins Promos. Kusajima’s borderline creepy take on Gyarados with the odd angles and smile also remind me why I love Psychic types so much for their borderline-to-down-right occultic designs. I’d LOVE to have a binder full of these cards in every language. Perhaps some day!

Haha, you’re right! I’ve been having fun experimenting with that little emblem. And thank you! It’s been an exciting journey. I feel like I constantly thank people here and was worried that if I made a similar post as my one on IG it would sound redundant or come off as disingenuous. But I’m honestly thankful for the people who have brought me here, E4 especially has opened my world to collecting in a way I didn’t expect. All of the resources, knowledge pools, everything. As much as I go through periods of burn out with this community, at the end of the day, I feel grateful for it and just manage the bad days better now. I owe so much to the people here and need to find a way to pay the community back for everything it’s done for me - something off of IG. One day at a time though.

Great stuff @azulryu, good luck on the Snap!

Thanks man! If I manage to somehow get that, I’m going to have to go even further in my collection goals after!

No problem! Yeah for sure not many reasons to go back once you have a snap card!

Having been involved in a few projects as of the last couple of months, I forgot I haven’t updated this in a hot minute!

Something I already mentioned in my buy thread - I was looking to get another New Year Present card after selling my stupidly years ago. I had to save since last summer and power sell a ton of small odds and ends including almost my entire childhood Digimon collection before I was finally able to purchase another and complete my Gyarados Cameo part of my collection (thank you again @chrisbalestra for bring it to my attention):

Still doing some light research on these, but here’s some Tomy Metal Shooters:

I’ll have to upload a video later showcasing one in action - they’re quite fun to watch!

Behind it you can see this vintage Poster showcasing the Gym series. I always wanted one of these posters but wanted one that highlighted Gyarados specifically:

Love the highlight on the Trophy cards:

Picked up a Nissui Gyarados card a while back too and forgot to show:

I also recently purchased a lot from Nidokingdom on IG (he has a massive non-TCG and Nidoking line collection) with these old school 1998 Pokefesta Shogakukan Stamps:

Here’s every Gyarados featured int them:

A kind stranger on IG called “dailypokeflex” saw my collection and gifted me this absolutely sick Gyarados Poster - I love it especially since I wasn’t able to get a poster or shirt from the Pokemon Center at the time it released so I was over the moon:

I got a few more odds and ends but will have to upload more pictures later!

Dude the stadium stamps are quite possibly the best I’ve ever seen. I bought those after you and I talked about stamps a while back.

So in other words, who do I have to blame for my recent stamp acquisition? YOU!

(Thank you  )

Oh and congrats on reattaining the prize!

@brendantheclayboy, I remember! Haha, so glad you got into them as well. They’re so fun to look at and make me nostalgic for the old Stadium game. I also love any and every depiction of Gyarados using Hyper Beam so the last one is my favorite, though the first perturbed looking one also gets me. XD

And thank you! I remember flailing about it in one of our earlier conversations. I don’t care that it’s taped up and marked on the back since the front looks so good. My older one had a bit of residue on it and was slightly more faded on the front despite having a solid back.

New cards were just released to S7!!!
Pokebeach article HERE.

I was just talking to a couple of Gyarados collectors about the gaps in Gyarados releases being no larger than 2 years apart since a few of the newer ones were worried we wouldn’t see another for a while. But considering a Dynamax Gyarados showed up in the anime, I figured it was likely to see it - especially considering the 25th anniversary timing.
Considering previous sets, there’s a good chance that we might see an alt art of Gyarados! I’m so excited! My second favorite Pokemon also got a V Card (Volcarona) so I might JUST have to try to update that side collection again but we’ll see. XD

@gyarados416 , I’m sure we’ll be hyping it up for a while! And @rustedharmony , I’m sure you can empathize with your own excitement for more Eevees. XD

So some additions that I haven’t revealed yet. I’m starting to lose track of things to show since I’ve been building up a display case and finding some goodies I’ve never showcased before. So again, forgive me if they’re repeats.

First off we have this beat-up 1997 TOMY Chara Dash Pokemon Launcher. I have been avoiding getting anything too clunky but this was so unique and was in a lot with a few other things I needed so I couldn’t say no. They make them for Pikachu and Charizard as well as a few others, I believe:

Reminds me of some old school Kaiju design. XD

I shared this in The Most Recent Purchase Thread but also forgot to share it here. I’ve always had an aversion to stickers since most bore me and have overused stock art, but now I have a solid reason to collect them since I can put them all in this Decochara Seal Holder:

Which was perfect since I also recently got ahold of this sticker I’ve never seen before and still doing some light research on:

Now for some post cards and odds and ends!

Pokemon Center 20th Anniversary Shaymin Postcard:

And thanks originally to @nidokingdom for showing me some Banpresto postcards I wasn’t aware of, I worked with a seller known as “sinistermew” who broke up a lot they were trying to sell and added in some random goodies for me as well:

Adding this stamp set to my stamp collection (now how am I going to get all of these individually? XD):

But my major prize and goal were these 1999 Banpresto No.0142 Gyarados/Dragonite Postcards:

I had only seen their Holo version so I was THRILLED when they revealed they had the non-holo as well. The back is cool too since it showcases an old favorite - Mewtwo!

I love this as Gyarados and Dragonite have been popularly featured together for years and especially in the early era of Pokemon in the manga, anime, and non-TCG. They have direct ties with Lance but have also been featured in other Banpresto merchandise where they’re battling together or featured together. Some may also recall the Hanafuda set which also features them together (Gyarados/Dragonite in upper left):

Now on to some regular cards! A while back @fritz introduced me to a variant I wasn’t aware of for Base Gyarados. Italian Base Gyarados typically shows up as a Cosmo Holo but every once in a while you’ll find a more rare Star Foil Holo. I scrounge Base Gyarados for errors nearly every day and finally found a rough copy to add to my Unlimited variants (now if only I could get Korean…):

Speaking of variants. I showcased this recently in the Holo Shift Thread but didn’t update here. My deposit for two Eevee Heroes Boxes were returned due to an order not being able to be completed which left me in the dumps. However, that very same day, poke_rizz on IG, an error collector, showed me this Holo Shift, Ink Shift, Alignment Shift, Miscut Misty’s Gyarados and pointed me to the individual who had it.

Least to say, I’d never been so happy to lose the ability to get a Japanese box because I reached out to the owner, an individual named Mischa, and worked out a deal after some much intense back-and-forth video sharing and card comparison to confirm it’s authenticity. He had just recently gotten back into Pokemon and bought a few big lots where this was one of them. He almost threw it out thinking it was fake!

I have since dubbed it, “Mischa’s Gyarados”.

And the back is centered!

Here’s a closeup of the holo shift (and well… everything shift):

And a side-by-side comparison of my own copy:

I’ve got a lot more thoughts to share with a few more tidbits, but at the potential expense of exhausting myself and the reader, I’ll leave it here for now.

Cheers!

Lovely update, makes me happy to see how a community of collectors interacts and communicates. The Mischa story is a great example of worldwide collecting in the internet age. Thanks for sharing!

Didn’t knew about this. @fritz Do you know if this was the case with all unlimited edition Italian Base Set Holofoils, Tony? And how about 1st edition? Or was it just the Gyarados in particular (which would be odd). Either way, TIL. I need to keep this in mind when making my single Pokémon lists.
And great additions overall, Devin! Always nice to see an update of your collection.

@pulpyfan it’s one of the major reasons why I’ve stuck with E4 over the years and why I’ve been happy to use IG as a platform. Connecting with other like minded individuals who can inspire, educate, and assist other collectors is one of the seemingly core tenets that a lot of people have within these kinds of communities.

Thanks man! I’ll have to find a few others that are done in the same way. Meiji has made some crazy things in the past for sure, but I’ve seen the Gen 1 starters in this form as well. Will have to send you a list if I can find the old listings. It was my first time seeing the Gyarados as well!

I believe this goes for Unlimited Base, I’ve seen a few others outside of the Gyarados incidentally. The last theory I believe we poised was that they may have just end-printed some cards with the Star Foil to wrap up sales, but there’s really no evidence for this. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tony has found more information regarding this as he’s good like that and it’s been a year or two since he first asked me if I had any info on it (which I obviously had none).

I wouldn’t be surprised too if @regigigagod or @thecharizardauthorty had some potential information on these either considering their digs into the TCG printing process and rare foil variants.

And appreciate it, man! I likewise appreciate your dedication to culminating more information regarding stuff like this.

And thanks @joponnes ! I have enjoyed IG a lot as a platform but I will forever post more on here as it feels like the place it ultimately belongs. Perhaps one day I’ll compile all of this information together with clearer pictures as I’ve done more digging on a lot of my non-TCG stuff especially.

TIL

Had no idea there were variants like that. Wonder if it’s the same sort of incidence as fossil is with its cosmo holos.

Speaking to another Gyarados collector, they made the suggestion that the Star Foil variant may come from the Italian Starter deck:

Haven’t been able to verify yet but I don’t see it as unreasonable since we’ve seen variants from similar situations. I was able to actually get another one when I vacationed to visit some friends in San Diego. I went to a card/comic/toy shop called “TC’s Rockets” and apparently missed bumping into Gary and another Gyarados collector by the IG handle of Jurrasic Karp two days earlier. Chris, the employee there, helped me out with purchasing it - I HIGHLY recommend anyone to check it out. It was a huge wave of nostalgia seeing toys, cards, and items from my early childhood. The place is MASSIVE! I might share pictures of the place later, but definitely look them up: tcsrockets.com/

@nidokingdom , they’re certainly more interesting than the typical cookie-cutter stock art! Saw you eventually make an IG post and loved seeing so many different kinds! Reminds me I still need to get back to you about the GB Mini Cards. I’ll get on that when I get some spare time - I recall coming across a pamphlet or commercial from Japan that had more info on their distribution.

Anyways, some updates. I’ve been building a display over the last few months and have been doing some deep dives and uncovering some stuff I’ve never showcased. However most of this is new stuff:

Got a lot of Animation Mini Cards. I don’t know too much about the set yet, but I had been keeping my eye out for the ones that feature Gyarados. I know they’re on the back of some larger cards and pop out much like Vending Machine cards do:

I apologize for the quality of this picture as their holographic nature makes them hard to photograph - pictures don’t even do them justice. These are Meiji Chocolate Rainbow Stickers. There’s 2 versions of each that I know of. They remind me of Ghost Rares from Yugioh with their florescent background:

Far from good condition, but I’ve been looking for this Topsun Gyarados for a few years now and was happy to find one for cheap:

The back of this series always features the main Pokemon featured in the main card. So say you have a Pikachu, the back label also displays a Pikachu:

Been picking up more Nagatenien stuff as of late (they’re the Japanese noodle company that does a lot of Pokemon promo stuff) and got this Nagatenien Variety Sticker:

I LOVE finding Gyarados stuff that depicts it using moves like Dragon Rage and Hyper Beam as I believe them to be iconic for the Pokemon. So I was thrilled when I finally got this Bandai Advanced Generation card:

Did another exchange with @nidokingdom and traded for this sticker and Banpresto postcard - now I just need the Blastoise set and this one in holographic:

Thanks again, Dominic! Also shout-out to @chopin for our recent conversation about postcards - it’s been a joy learning more about the postcard side of the non-TCG.

And speaking of post-cards. Also a major shout-out to @thedude1990 for our recent convos as well as this awesome trade - been dragging my feet on checking off my postcard and Topsun list so I was overjoyed that he helped me fill in some empty spots!

Just need a Dialga card and a Gyarados/Sharpedo card and my Topsun part of my non-TCG collection SHOULD be complete unless I missed some I’m not aware of. I admit to not being as well informed about these sets as some others.

I was especially excited about the figure postcard since I’ve been slowly moving away from cookie-cutter stock art items of Gyarados since I no longer can afford the space to keep them and have been instead focusing on unique depictions.

One of which is this original display for a Bandai Full Color Stadium Gashopon Figure (Part 6) Display which had, you guessed it, Gyarados:

The back is blank but I also had to get the figurines to match the set:

Speaking of displays, I’ve been thinking of getting some cut-outs of the old school Pokemon Stadium 2 advertisements since Shiny Gyarados was basically treated as a Gen 2 Pokemon. I lost the piece of paper I had that I had written down where the pages came from, but I’ll be able to find them again:

I’m very fond of the one on the right, as that page is familiar to me when I read the magazine as a kid - the joke about “kicking butt” stuck out to my teenage mind.

Also finally got this Banpresto Jumbo of a classic:

Also does anyone have info on this figure? I’ve had this for a while and never was able to find info on it when I first got it. I have 2 other figures (Mew & Bulbasaur) that have the same kind of “energy” tag attached to them but don’t know where they came from:

Also I forgot to take photos of these so I’ll just use the listing pics - this is from Pokemon Center Hiroshima where Red Gyarados is the staple mascot. They’re called Nishikido Momiji Manjyu and feature Gyarados in the center of the box. Momiji Manjyu are these sweet buns with bean paste inside:

Also incredible thanks to @weekendwolf for pointing me to a seller who, though I knew and had done dealings in the past, I did not realize was selling some very exciting Gyarados stuff. Wicked thankful as these have been hard to come by, especially the Himeno Poker cards which I first came to know existed thanks to @qwachansey . The seller also included this He also included this Televi-Kun Appendix Card -

Thanks again you two!

And last but not least. Incredible and whole-hearted thanks to @thedude1990 again for something I’ve been looking for casually for almost as many years as I’ve been collecting Gyarados. Even if I don’t come across the regular version, I now have the rarest version in hand.

As some may recall, as a kid my LGS had access to a lot of Japanese stuff including Japanese displays, magazines, toys, cards, you name it. It’s what inspired my non-TCG side of collecting. I remember flipping through the magazines and comics and seeing tons of merchandise that my store never could get it’s hands on despite how many things they DID get. One of the items I was drawn to were these Pop-Up Cards (middle-left):

When my family got their first computer, I tried looking for Japanese product but due to internet limitations, dial-up, and my child mind not being equipped to do deep dives like many of us can now, I never could find info on anything I had seen, including these. I curse myself for not picking up the magazines, displays, etc. that were available at my LGS as I see them now as incredible resources for the non-TCG.

Fast forward to around 2010 (I can’t remember the exact year), but I was looking for Gyarados items and stumbled across someone’s live-journal who had some pop-up cards and I saw an image of the regular Pop-up card that featured Misty’s Gyarados from the TCG. It was one of my favorite images of Gyarados and the post talked about there being a gold version that existed. However, a few years later, the user deleted their account and consequently all of their posts. However, in search on livejournal led me to a Gyarados collector named “Swampeh” who had a ton of non-TCG items that helped my original list all that time ago who would showcase pictures like this:

Though I don’t care to own all of the figurines and more bulky items of Gyarados, it gave me another spark I needed for my collection, and so I had been on the lookout for the Pop-up cards since then. Never forgetting what they looked like and hoping that the gold card did indeed exist.

Multiple attempts to contact sellers who either had bulk Pop-up cards and such were unwilling to open their sealed items to check for a Gyarados. Worst yet, none of them could recall Gyarados even BEING in the set nevermind even seeing them. The few who said the Gyarados existed said they didn’t believe the gold Gyarados existed.

In hopes of getting a long-awaited non-TCG grail out of the way, I finally put it on my buy list. And a little while longer, after no success on Mercari or Yahoo Japan @thedude1990 posted a link on my IG. I’ve been finishing up my display this past month and I’m happy to say that this grail makes the perfect centerpiece for my Gyarados collection. Better yet, the listing also came with the Dragonite, making the perfect counterpart I needed:

I don’t know if you know how much this means to me, but this has been one of my most important additions in these last few years. An item I didn’t even know existed and never seen, finally made it into my hands. Thank you so much again, man. I sat down with this thing for a long time:
