The Giant Professional Grading Thread

It has happened before. There’s seemingly no rhyme or reason when it occurs. My guess would be high-end items that pose greater liability under the grade guarantee.

Give it a roll at CGC or BGS. Worst case scenario, you crack and resubmit to PSA. I’m sure you’ll still be up many hundreds of dollars after the grading fees.

Thanks for the response. That’s mainly what my concern is. Some of my 1st Ed Base slabs somehow have cracks in the sides so I’m just worried that if I send them in for reholder then they will get targeted given the value

How hard is it to grade reverse holos pre-BW?

With all the nonsensical auction prices, I’m wondering if there is going to be a significant increase in population or whether because they were bulk up until this year that there is no supply incoming.

And if it is the latter, then what does that say about where we are?

These bulk cards would have become truly rare in PSA 10 condition so do they deserve those prices? lol

A cgc 9 may just equal the price of the new cert PSA 8. A 10 would be higher obviously but that’s really luck of the draw. I would probably just sell as is unless you want the crack and resub and wait 6 months game at PSA

It depends on which ones you’re talking about, but EX - DP era reverse holos range in grading difficulty from moderate to extreme difficulty.
Sets like hidden legends, Emerald, unseen forces are closer to the moderate end with print lines, alignment dots on back corners and centering being your chief concerns.

The mirror reverse holos from Ruby, Sandstorm, Dragon, DP era and the reverse sets prone to silvering and ink issues like TRR and Deoxys are near the extreme end of the spectrum. Surface scratching on the mirror holos is essentially impossible to avoid. Cards going directly from pack to PSA are your only hope at a 10 there, but the dozens I have graded have literally never earned a 10.

I have graded Expedition Reverses in 10s.

More luck than judgement.

Mid era stuff was so janky quality wise like candle said.

Raw 10 material is thinner on the ground than it’s ever been.

Maybe Europe PSA opening will unearth some treasures but we’ll have to see!

Expedition is not one of the sets I mentioned. Those are easy

I didn’t say you mentioned expedition.

I said you mentioned mid era.

I don’t think ~~5% gem rate is “easy”, even if it’s easier than Secret Wonders, but you do you

Yeah, I get that it’s kind of how collectibles work (common items becoming exceedingly rare over time) but still it’s a little bit mad that these cards are actually rarer (or will be rarer) than most Charizards despite their original rarity.

And I don’t think that this extreme premium will extend organically towards any other grade of the card. Obviously many will try to price their non-gradeable cards up because of ridiculous prices (Cacnea 1 of 1 reverse went for 21k+ lol) but I struggle to see any real organic demand for any of these outside the PSA 10.

I don’t really agree with you, the 9 grade is no cake walk either

There are loads of great looking cards to collect and great sets to put together in lower grades. There has been a ton of demand for 9s and 8s on eBay.

The thing about new entrants into the market is that they don’t share the same biases that entrenched collectors have. The first and best example of this is Legendary Collection reverse holos. You’ll hear over and over how people used to hate those cards and then one day everything changed. The oldest collectors never bought them, it was new people with fresh POV that got those going.

Same is true now for EX - DP era set cards. People who have been around remember the 10s going for under $100 and are used to beating the WOTC and Japanese Promo drum so they don’t see the value in a PSA 9 reverse holo zigzagoon. But new collectors don’t share those experiences and just see the cards for what they are.

I think the fundamentals might be slightly different.

First I’ll predict that most of these PSA10 reverse pops from EX-DP will never break 50 if they are still below 10.

Which means that in that grade, they will be rarer than most chase cards ever.

But it doesn’t change the fact that they were and are and always will be a reverse holo of a card in the set. So it’s this weird dichotomy where they have the highest conditional rarity and yet are relatively common cards otherwise.

It’ll be like if in 15 years time, because no one graded bulk common reverse holos from SWSH or SV, that they are also worth tens of thousands despite never being a chase card and still being a common bulk card the whole time.

Reverse Holos are a weird rarity. While there is a reverse in every pack, any individual reverse holo is typically rarer than a given holo from the set, given the pool of different cards is much larger. Additinoally, in earlier EX era sets the rarity distribution was different. I think we discussed on here a while back that a given EX from Ruby and Sapphire was more common than a given reverse holo - and maybe even a given holo if I’m remembering right.

You are correct about the 10 pops. Most have been basically static since 2021 or so. I doubt any card will double up in population even w the 10 million cards at PSA rn. Especially so for the harder to grade cards. There are plenty of mirror reverses that are pop 0 in 10s. Team Magma groudon comes to mind, there are 31 9s and 0 10s. I graded like 6-7 of the 9s myself and never struck the 10 :((((((((((((((((((((((((((

I hate that the home screen for he PSA app is a collection value chart. I get it, part of the fun is making money and having a valuable collection. But its just not necessary and I’d like to toggle it off. Not be the home screen.

Agreed! They should let you customize what landing page to arrive on

Cant open the app in public

Curious about how this (bottom left) corner would fare if I were to crack and regrade with PSA. I’ve never seen a corner cut like this in any other card. Wondering if Beckett themselves would give this a 9 these days. I can’t even look this card up on Beckett’s site atm.

Last card I sent in that had a miscut corner came back raw as N:8 Miscut so I’d guess they wouldn’t even grade it.
