The Giant Professional Grading Thread

There go the quick turnarounds. Nice of them to do tcg first though. I feel bad for everyone who was waiting on cheaper tiers

Multiple folks called this. I think they will get a good sized wave of subs from sports folks. Was able to get a good amount in at $15. Will be waiting for it to come down a bit more for the rest.

My subs made it to RID today thank god I got in under the wire there before the sports cards roll in

Anyone notice any issues with their July special? Its my first sub so idk how frequent this is, but i had several cards come back to me with fairly severe corner whitening. I sent a base venusaur which was so clean, it was one of the items i was most excited to see, and i was genuinely confused when i checked my grades and saw it got an 8. However, when i received the card in the mail, i quickly realized there was pretty hard dings on literally every corner, which were not there before. Its frustrating bc that card was gonna fund a rly big item i plan on buying next year and now that PSA has damaged it, its worth less than what i paid + grading. It wasnt just that card, there was several that returned to me damaged, including a blaines charizard and a 2004 tropical wind that were MINT when i sent them. These cards arent easy to find in mint condition, so its frustrating that i spend lots of time and money acquiring them, only for them to get dinged up in grading. If it was one, it wouldnt be a big deal, but it was like 5 or 6 of the 21 cards i sent. Im a little hesitant to submit more cards now

So sorry to hear that. Haven’t received back my July special submissions, but I’ve had cards damaged in previous PSA grading/reholder submissions. Damage is minor but it is still annoying.

I’ve had some cards come back with new spots of whitening and damage I didn’t see before for both grading and reholder submissions. Purely anecdotal but it happens to me quite frequently. I guess due to the large volume of submissions, psa have to speed up their grading process, which may in turn treat the cards with less care. I know many efour members like to say that those damage were already present before sending to psa, just that we “missed out” during pre grading. I don’t think that is true all the time, I scrutinise the cards before I send them for grading.

Yea its definitely frustrating! Hopefully they can get that under control because damaging 25% of the cards im sending is pretty awful!

I definitely didnt miss the damage! I inspect condition very heavily; i look my cards over many times, in different lighting and i even have pictures (i know im kinda extra about it lol). This experience definitely impacts my approach to collecting. I may lean away from subbing cards if this is a regular thing because i just cant rly hang with that lmao

Contact their customer support team (there’s an email floating around I’m sure someone will post), provide pictures of the card prior to grading, for instance if you bought the card somewhere, provide the receipt along with the listing’s images. They’re really good about making their customers whole from everything I’ve seen. These things happen from time to time unfortunately, but that’s where dealing with a reputable company comes into play. Best of luck!

One of the examples of whitening I’m talking about, caused by PSA. This card was graded a 10. No way I would have missed that out.

Just sharing my experience.

it’s hilarious that we cherish our cards so much when they’re in our possession, making sure to handle them with care, making sure not to even breathe on them.

I’ve heard anecdotes of how grading works at PSA. It’s just people picking up cards quickly and passing them around a table for second opinions. It’s a lot more primitive than many would think.

Not surprised if that is true. Volume of cards graded is just too huge at PSA.

Collectors definitely treat their cards a million times better than PSA does. Kind of ironic that you send a well kept card of PSA 10 “quality” to people on minimum wage to inspect for 30 seconds to tell you that it is indeed well kept.

The amount of damaged cards is not a one off either, I keep reading about it everywhere.

Not terribly surprised, tho it is disheartening. They grade collectibles; these items are very important to us and there is a limited supply of mint copies. Youd at least hope they could be a little careful when handling our items, especially considering how much they charge/ how their service model works.
Here are a few of mine, all of which had no corner whitening prior to submission. Didnt feel like breaking out the Blaine’s Zard, but the one kinda hurt the most because its for the PC.

PSA has been very quick turnaround for me. Mailed at the value 30$ tier on 10/13, Got back in hand today 11/4. Super fast compared to the site’s est turnaround of 90-120 days.

you can actually do that? I wanted to submit S12 Paradigm Trigger cards right after release when I pulled them but the set wouldnt pop up when trying to enter it. How do you enter it manually? Just copy paste another set and replace with other sets name/symbol?

Yep, that’s exactly right!

What part of the process does PSA let you know of upcharge? Is it the shipping stage or qa check? I submitted a card in the bulk tier that is worth more then declared value raw but have yet to see an upcharge and it hit qa check 2 today. And how accurate or consistent is the upcharging, i read some people commenting they didnt get upchagred for some cards that were 10’s and clearly worth more then decl value

You’ll get upcharged during QA2. It will stay in QA2 until someone from PSA reaches out to you confirming the upcharges. Once you approve them, they will process it and move it into Shipping.

They’re definitely not consistent, it really all depends on the card. Obscure stuff seems to make it by much easier, but it really can just be a crapshoot.

For example, in my last $18 sub I was upcharged for a PSA 10 Pikachu on the Ball, but not a PSA 10 Pikachu Stamp promo. They rarely seem to nitpick, you usually just get upcharged if you tried to sneak something egregious through.

My October $15 submission just moved into Assembly!

Dates so far:
Arrived: 10/17
Entered: 10/24
Entered “Grading” phase: 10/30
Entered “Assembly” phase: 11/5

Anyone else’s submission moving this fast? This is A LOT faster than I expected it to go.

Yeah, mine is too. They seem to be moving quick now. My $15 10/14 sub is in assembly and my $22 9/28 sub is in QA1.
