The Giant English Market Thread

That’s not even the half of it!

Some shenanigans on IG these days.
I’m starting to feel too old for this

I can’t believe you’re comparing non-holo Areceus Gengar to Rayquaza :goldstar:. This must be a satire account. :fishing_pole:

Are you implying it’s fiscally responsible to spend 20% of your salary on Pokemon cards? Especially at age 25–young enough that investing in productive assets (e.g., not collectibles) is that much more critical. Can’t tell if you’re being serious.

I don’t know why people assume that collecting vintage Pokemon indicates any interest whatsoever in modern Pokemon. I collect the cards I do because of nostalgia and because they’re really collectible (i.e., back in 2003, almost no adults even collected Pokemon cards, let alone hoarded sealed product or opened thousands of packs, perfectly preserving everything they pulled). I have literally zero interest in modern Pokemon cards, and I don’t think I’m alone. Liking one does not imply liking the other.

Should be at least 30% to be a tru collector

i wanna know if there is anyone paying 3k for a pop 15000 moonbreon or 2500 for an evolving skies box to “collect” and has no plans to sell it in the future

That’s a great salary at 25. If you avoid viewing it as disposable you’re off to a great start.

At 25 with no kids and making 6 figures, I assume you are putting $23k into 401k, $7k into Roth IRA, $3750 into HSA prior to buying Pokeyman cards?

Yeah I’m pretty financially responsible as I work in financial investments. Get the max pension matching, invest in my index portfolio and have a dividend portfolio too. I don’t drink, do drugs or go on any expensive holidays or own a car since I live in the London, UK (No need). My hobbies include reading books, exercising and working on my business so I’m quite frugal. The way I see it is I’m doing good for my age and my peers are all wasting their incomes on stuff that has zero residual value, so dropping $20k-$30k these past years on Pokémon cards is okay. Strangely enough, my collection has rocketed since most of it were gold stars. My biggest expenses are probably food and Pokémon cards haha

Thanks mate will take on that advice. I feel like some cards like Gold Stars/Shining/Crystals will never lose value in the long term, they are basically like gold bullion at this point

Wow, that’s a great profile. I, myself, enjoy long walks on the beach and am recently single

There is so much money in this world, hundreds of trillions of dollars. 100k is a rounding error to more people than you think…

It’s like how the first reaction to someone having a nice car is often negative. “It must be a lease”. “They must have no kids”. “They must live with their parents”.

Its the crab-bucket mentality. Consider crabs in a bucket about to be boiled. One starts to crawl out, but gets pulled back down by the others.

A lot of people are richer than you and I, and run in different circles. Simple as that.

So to spend 20k on a card aged 25…why not? It’s no different than a new car, which i’m sure will depreciate faster anyway. Enjoy your life!

Also, this is me spending about tree fiddy on cards…

Idk about you, but I’ve always thought cars were pretty useful to drive around. I didn’t know they were some kind of random collectible bought only to flip it in 1-2 years, definitely interesting

Yes, but no one here is talking about insanely rich people spending $ on cards. There’s a guy on Instagram (many people will know who I’m talking about) who is literally the son of a dude with a >$10B net worth. To someone in that situation, go wild! I know I would.

But that’s not the situation we’re talking about here. A 25 y/o with a normal job spending 20% of his/her salary on Pokemon cards is making a very imprudent financial decision.

Don’t worry they are mostly in :goldstar:, safer than putting money in a savings account. I don’t really invest in modern.

‘Very imprudent financial decision’, so is getting a dog, getting married or dropping money or car lease payments

There were gold star bubbles in the past, like 11 years ago. History repeats itself time and time again

If you think gold stars at the current prices are safer than putting money in a savings account, then I have a bridge to sell you lol

Saying that as someone who likes gold stars

Just spend your money how you want. Don’t listen to these guys if you don’t want to. You’ve been made aware of their concerns.

edit: reply was supposed to be to @Wishingstar981

I wasn’t responding to convince @Wishingstar981 to spend his money differently. I was responding for the benefit of whoever else might read this thread and think “hmmm, maybe it IS a decent idea to put 20% of my salary into pokemon cards”
