The Giant English Market Thread

I cant imagine that people are sending tons to grade now even with lower tiers. Stuff just sells a lot less and most newbs are gone so anyone left is probably doing some thinking first

I barely wanted to grade my 1st ed base starters even if they all get psa 9. Not as many people care about grading these days and the sales are pretty weak

May just be anecdotal then, but on the facebook groups I’m part of, there seems to be plenty of Wotc slabs listed daily, and not a lot of comments to buy.

There are a ton but i think its from old backlog clearing not new rates

Gem Rate suggests people are grading more than ever now with PSA doing 1M+ cards a month. Bulk specials + ludkins returns + weak market makes it feel like the floods will continue.

Crazy! I find it a billion times easier to sell nm raw than slabs rn. Idk why everyone would want to stockpile more slabs unless theyre for collecting

Im waiting til all psa 9 muks have returned and the price has bottomed and im then going to buy them all up and release 1 at a time lol.

Also seeing a lot of this in my local groups. I think wallet fatigue is a real thing, especially with primarily modern collectors.

Also people are getting more knowledgeable about the market so they know how to spot a good deal and stuff that’s truly rare.

That is nuts! There is a lot of tunnel vision in English modern. Along with impatience. I was always cautious with Pika on the ball because it never felt finished. Similar to Special Delivery Charizard. Both felt too speculative even before news of more supply.

definitely a ton of great prices on mint WotC cards. I’ve been getting some great deals here and there. also, thought i’d throw my two cents in: i just listed some unlimited base holos for sale in PSA 8 and they sold the same day they were listed. maybe more people are buying nm raw because they feel it’s easier/ cheaper/ more rewarding to buy nm and grade themselves, as opposed to buying already graded?

That being said, there is a surprising amount of liquidity in original ex era rn. I sold some PSA 7 & 8s very quickly as well. I am still on my personal theory that the hype group of people are still around, they’ve just diffused into different areas. sure, said group isn’t as big as it was in 2020, but I think a lot of people moved to ex or back into modern bc vintage ā€œisnt fun anymore.ā€ it was just like, suddenly all the people who were hyping wotc in 2020, started hyping up ex; like i started seeing similar groups of people, making similar types of content, but now about ex cards. of course, this could just be me reading way too deep into things and maybe it’s unrelated but idk.

i’ve been seeing all the doomer ā€˜market’s crashing/ bubble popped!’ rhetoric for a while now (not saying thats whats happening here), and i personally have to disagree with that sentiment. things dont feel slow or crash-like at all to me

EX spiked before early WotC in 2020. EX went crazy in April/May 2020, whereas Base didn’t spike hard until later that year. I didn’t see YouTubers hyping up EX; do you have examples of that? It would surprise me because the main EX spike was before Logan Paul. Since then (~2 years ago), EX prices have been generally pretty stable – no dramatic spikes/dips.

I think the main reason why EX has maintained its value more than early WotC is supply. Unlike early WotC, the EX market just never experienced saturation and the ensuing race-to-the-bottom.

Hmm… sorry, I should’ve been more specific. Anecdotally, I’ve seen more EX hyping over the past year or so, than in and around the WotC hype of 2020. That being said, I wasn’t deep into the collector space the way I am now in early 2020, so it’s possible that I’m missing details that are impacting how I’m perceiving things. I don’t really have specific examples at this point, I guess I just noticed more people on Instagram talking about EX; I noticed an uptick of EX era buzz, relative to what I was seeing before, but again, I’ve only been deep into the hobby since late 2020. I was just seeing more EX cards, more EX sealed, more people ripping EX packs, and just more people talking about EX in general on social medias over this past ~8-10 months. I also had some EX cards that seemed to increase in value more recently. Most notably, I purchased a NM Gengar ex from FrLg just over a year ago and remember looking over prices on PSA 8s and thinking I was probably gonna lose money on the card (lol). However, I graded it and it sold the same day it was listed (about a week ago) for $350USD. I could be misremembering, but I definitely thought that card was closer to =<$300 CAD PSA 8 not too long ago. That’s not a massive difference and I know it’s a very popular card, but I have personally found there to be more hype around EX recently.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; I grew up on original EX era and I love it a lot! I started seeing more EX than WotC on socials, but again, could just be me/ my algorithm (though, I don’t think I engage in a ton of EX content). I definitely agree that EX has low supply, which will likely cause less downward pressure, relative to WotC. I do wonder if we will see more EX start popping up as prices increase.

Agreed. I picked up some from good ol Ebay to admire and in the future possibly grade depending on how many of them are released. I did a whole history lesson on these and how they were first released. It’s crazy to think this card sold for that much with no holo pattern or special shine/crazy artwork. I know that is a flawed mindset, but I can’t blame myself for feeling this way since any pricy modern card nowadays has 10 layers of Holo pattern shinning like a disco ball when light hits it.

Goes to show rarity is the ultimate chase in any collectable hobby at the end of the day.

Seeing PSA 10 Special Delivery Charizards go for $400, $500, $600 is crazy to me, straight up. The cards that kind of money can buy is just silly.

Does anyone have a most recent price for a sealed (non-PWCC) Neo Rev 1st Edition booster box?

To be fair, it seems hard to grade as a 10. Mine arrived with several holo scratches from jostling around in the sealed plastic as well as jostling around loose in a box with 2 blister packs and 0 packing. Seems a lot of people had theirs thrown in loose in a box with other product. I was just thankful mine wasnt dented or creased.

I dont want to rile anyone up with this but i have sorta observed that the market seems to be ā€œrejectingā€ 8s and 8.5s now. By that i mean they consistently sell at or lower than nm raw prices.

I own tons and tons of 8s and 8.5s so im not really loving this but it does allow me to buy more for what i consider cheap prices. I imagine it is a combo of the fact that 8-8.5 quality cards still generally exist raw in peoples collection and that the market is somewhat down. Highly popular cards still do fine in these grades but even top tier cards like neo 1st ed holos have been hammered down to raw prices!

Ive seen the opposite in vintage cards, unlimited at least. Any 7+ is selling consistency higher than their ungraded counterpart.

Guess it shows each of us is just a data point.

Really? Unlimited 7s? Who would buy that in this market at any premium. Ive been winning 1st ed 8.5s and one 9 cheaper than raws though i never look at unlimited. Auctions only

You can jump right now at ebay and grab a 7,8,9 or 10 graded card for more than an ungraded copy, at least for the majority of holos of the Neo block.

Well obviously BIN will be high but i didnt think they sell when auctiona go so low all the time
