No, that’s not a good thing. Because you could put $100 in the stock market today and it will turn into close to $500 in 15 years. If you have to wait 10-15 years for your $100 box to become $300-$500, you’re absolutely better off putting your money in the stock market. And that $100 box becoming $300-$500 is a big if. There are baseball boxes from the early 90s still worth less than original MSRP. The notion that a $100 booster box can only go up in value is a fiction. Hell, up until a few years ago there were MTG boxes from the early 90s that were barely saleable at original MSRP.

But what if the stock I invested in only goes up a couple dollars in that 10-15 years? It’s all a gamble when it comes down to it.

Sorry, I should’ve been more clear: by “stock market” I didn’t mean an individual stock. I meant putting money into a stock market index fund. It’s a fairly reliable way to generate 7-12% annual ROI over the medium-long term.

I’m not saying a $100 booster box can only go up in value. I’m just saying buying modern isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

No one is saying buying modern is necessarily a bad thing. People are just saying that it’s not the best investment decision.
