I think Caribou makes some valid points about influencer impact (whether intentional or unintentional), especially channels that are geared towards younger audiences. I think the underlying message is valid and worthy of self-reflection . . . are we making the hobby a better, stronger, more accessible community for future generations to enjoy.
HOWEVER, at the same time, she relies way too heavily on scapegoating, which is not an effective way to argue one’s points. I know Scott addressed this in his video today, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy Pokemon outside of a modern packs from retailers. It’s also insulting to assume that many of the pillars of our hobby, who have literally dedicated years (decades) into building up the hobby, creating a community, providing free knowledge, and raising money for charity, have nefarious intentions that involve hurting the hobby they worked so hard to build. It’s insulting. I also find it a bit hypocritical of Caribou to monetize her content (which is intentionally subversive and designed for Search Engine Optimization), when taking such a strong stance against capitalizing on Pokemon content.
This is embarrassing. “inner circle”, what is she even discussing at this point? This is blatant conspiracy drivel to the point of libel & defamation. The other insane claim that all the big investors are somehow in communication. Illuminati?!
I think (and hope) her audience is just too young. You’re 14, you don’t have enough coin (or at least you think you don’t) and you just can’t be bothered about spending it correctly or assessing your decision-making and trying to make the best out of a situation that could honestly be better (lack of supply etc), so you complain, whine and back whoever makes you feel validated.
people need to realize that frosted caribou is not trying to address a problem (that doesn’t even exist), but she is just making these videos for her own financial gains. All these content creators that are acting like they care that Billy can’t afford 1st edition charizards are just cringe.
Just watched the recent video by @smpratte talking about affordable options for enjoying Pokemon. Loved the video so I checked ebay to see what the “silver bible” was going for. A few hours later there were no more listings left and I see this on Instagram:
Can’t help but to appreciate the irony.
granted, I’m sure there were a lot of people who have never heard about the bible before and thought it genuinely sounded awesome, which it is. But I’m equally sure that there’s a group of people who just stonk based on whatever the latest video is.
What is even the point of this comment I’m writing?
Yes, I think the majority of people are genuinely interested in the book itself. It was my first time hearing about it and I immediately wanted one! The irony to me was that Scott advertised the book in his video as an affordable option, and by him doing so it got bought up and is no longer affordable. Obviously this is by no means his fault - just found it to be an interesting dynamic at play.
Yes a Japanese exclusive, already-niche print book only has so many copies. I too took a quick look on eBay right after the video and saw a few copies around $300. Checked back a couple hours later, all gone. One copy left on that platform for $900.
