I disagree with that premise entirely. By this logic, why buy an NFL jersey or a vinyl record? Why support an NFL team that has billions of dollars? Why support a band or musician who has millions of dollars? It’s not a donation by any means. I’m sure he’s doing fine financially, that’s not why people buy packs off the guy. People buy packs because he’s an entertaining and down to earth guy who is providing unweighted rare packs in a hobby where they hardly exist anymore. I’ll support that all day.

Another angle to this isn’t that you’re necessarily supporting the artist or content creator financially to help them pay their bills but rather supporting the content that they’re making now so they continue to create the content that you like. It’s the same reason why I’ll pay for a movie I like instead of pirating it.

That’s actually a really good point. I guess I didn’t clarify in my post. I was referring to tips or pay outside of the item you are buying. I understand buying a jersey or an album. I understand the value that some folks see from having someone else open your packs. I’ve only bought one pack from his openings and it was a 1st edition base because it was at market value. He was much smaller then and it was part of his goal to open one of every box. Back to the point of tips. I just find donating to them tips (in the hundreds) ridiculous. I’m glad that he’s doing well and he’s definitely one of the best in the hobby. There are other folks that are providing unweighed packs, more and more. In that regard, it’s not that rare if you look. I guess it’s hard for me to grasp it because I’m think the idea of wanting to pay so much to be a part of a community odd. I just can’t justify needing to pay people for youtube, only fans, twitch, etc.
Either way. People are going to do what they want. I just find it odd and curious.

I definitely understand that. However, most youtubers that are already established are making well into the 6 figures. Considering he’s probabaly making $50K+ a month profit on the boxes alone he’s going to continue. They wouldn’t make that money anywhere else if they left so they are definitely going to continue regardless. My view is that why would I give huge sums to someone who is has already well surpassed the threshold to take care of themselves and their family is like throwing another coin into Scrouge Mcduck’s pool. I think giving a small tip shows support enough in of itself.

So I have seen some videos lately that have rubbed me the wrong way, and given that this is a content creator thread, I figured I would post my thoughts on the subject.
Over the last year in particular, certain PokeTubers have emerged where they talk about how much they “care” about their audience and how “worried” or “concerned” they are about people who listen to big PokeTubers and the top people in the hobby.
Personally, I see it as complete BS. It’s like the person who donates to charity and has to tell everyone that they donated, or the person who films themselves giving to the homeless and proceeds to post it online so the entire world can see that they did it. Classic virtue signaling.
To me, this sudden “caring” about impressionable collectors and scrutiny of “the big bad PokeTubers” is nothing more than masked jealousy of the top guys in this hobby, the people who have helped build this hobby and make it what it is today. And of course, most viewers think the “concern” is legitimate. Lol.
Everyone, keep in mind that gossip frequently comes disguised as “concern.”
Scott doesn’t do this. Rusty doesn’t do this. People who have been publicly established for years in this hobby don’t do this.
TL;DR: There are snakes out there. Don’t be fooled by their disingenuous intentions.

@mjs61290 it would be interesting to see specific videos you are mentioning though it sounds like they are along the lines of the frosted caribou video? I guess hers was more about scalping and just click baiting too much with money or whatever.
The way I see it is best case these people are genuine and just care about people not getting taken advantage of. Worst case they are calling out people who may be trying to take advantage of people and using that so they can get ahead?
Whereas some subset of the people they are calling out (presumably since you didn’t link anything) are actually best case dumb as hell thinking everything is stonks or worst case shilling their own shit purely for gain. I remember hearing people saying $1k jungle pikachu and eevee made sense and were good buys. Same goes for $6k base unl 9 charizard and I think it’s reasonable to warn people about things like that. I sold those things as did many here I’m sure but it’s one thing to just sell into the market at current market value and it’s another thing to shout from the rooftops how good of a deal what you are selling is… because if so then why sell it? I had messages from some subset of those buyers months later asking me for investing advice and if I thought the cards would keep falling or not. I heard some of them quote specific videos or posts from people with a decent following at a loss for how the prices fell on some of these things.

I’m not going to link anything because I don’t want to call anyone out by name, but they aren’t calling out people who say Jungle Pikachu and Eevee were good buys (well, at least it’s not limited to those types of people). They’re taking subliminal shots at some of the very best people in this hobby, and it’s pretty clear who they’re talking about. I’ll leave it at that.
But this applies to basically every single content creator, even Leonhart with all he has done and is doing can be “suspected”, it just depends on the angle.
For me the “hey look, ive done 100 charity stuff, look how good of a human being i am!” is as toxic as “all i do is caring for this hobby, fuck the scalpers”. The healthy thing to do, as usual, is to digest the content and move on. Be selective with what you consume and if you do consume some shady content, be critic of it but this pretty much works for everything in life so nothing really “new”.
