The 4xxx Trend Needs To Die

Well I have a ton of “near mint” cards if you’re interested, based on your parameters.

That seems to be the rumor on the block. But even if it’s true which it might be it seems some buyers treat them like trash or talk down old certs too often. It’s still the same card. That’s why you buy the card not the cert number

Members have scrapped psa data, and it doesn’t correlate. Naturally cards will be less mint over time. The best are modern cards. Most are pulled from packs, and of course, the data is the same for all certs.

Your card fits in that category based on the pictures you showed and looking on my mobile phone. The front is definitely more scratched up than the PSA description. However, the centering looks decent and the gloss on the car appears to be there. The eye appeal of the card doesn’t look horrible. It could be a 6, but it was graded a 7. It’s not that far off the grade. one aspect of the card can be balanced out by the rest of the card.

Personally, I think a MAJOR contributing factor to the perceived “harsher grading” is that the supply of MINT ungraded cards is significantly diminishing. As collectors continue to submit cards in the future, we will likely see a gradual, but incremental decrease in the average quality of card being submitted. Using myself as a personal example, I recently submitted 185 cards to PSA . . . while most of the these cards should receive 8’s and above, I’m not expecting nearly as many 10’s as usual, since I already submitted my best copies in previous orders.

Smaller supply of mint ungraded cards + increased volume of submissions = lower average condition.

To play devil’s advocate:

Don’t you believe that older products have been busted open and graded more then ever, at least more than in the past? (5+ years ago)

Wouldn’t they expect high grades from pack fresh cards? Even if most of us know that pack fresh does not mean 10, or even 9 some times?

I see this in two ways. People are grading less then perfect cards because prices of 8-9 have increased, and they want to protect their cards from there collection as a kid, like myself…leaning to more grades lower then what people expect in the reports.

Sorry for the poor quality of pictures, I took them quickly. This card has more issues then you see in the pictures

It’s one of the cases, that you just look at it face on, and you see all the flaws right away, you dont need to do much turning into the light to see them.

To me, a near mint card has some minor flaws but not on almost every category. The only category it passes is centering.

But, that’s why grading is so subjective. I could see a 4-5, and someone else could see a 7.

I thought if you make an offer you are locked in if it gets accepted? I would tell him if he didn’t want the old cert he shouldn’t have made the offer lol. Maybe im just salty

To me, new or old cert doesn’t matter. I never knew it was a “thing” to look down upon older cert #’s lol. Sounds kinda ridiculous if you ask me. Just buy the best looking one in your opinion and be happy with it.

Is there legit proof of this? Just curious.

It’s always hard to tell. Is pictures. It’s very subjective. I don’t usually consider cards below 6 unless they have a crease and/or have lost their gloss and have scratches like that. That to me a played card. Considering all that and what you said I would probably consider it a 6.

Raise it 100 percent even if temporary if everyone raised new cert for wotc card prices people would stop aiming for just those and get off their high horse and buy the card they like not the cert number

This is just ridiculous… Now the only reason I would prefer a newer cert over an older is because of people thinking there is an actual difference.

the cert number literally doesn’t matter if you have good scans and just look at the card
