Tariffs on items coming in from Japan

Customs clearnace seems to a bit slower these days. I had an EMS package that was stuck on dispatch from Japan on Aug 1st, and I just received notice of it clearing customs today.

That’s good to know. I’m sure they’re bogged down with all of the new rumblings from above on tariffs and import restrictions.

You’re risking it at the $2500 threshold? I’ve been doing smaller shipments of $800 or less without issue or delays.

No, 180,000 yen is about ~$1,200 USD. I am too nervous to try the formal entry with everything going on right now. A recent package of mine was over the $800 threshold and it was very quick as always. This one is just taking a bit longer than usual, and it’s after the recent global tariff shakeup.

Has anyone made any bigger purchases lately like for a few grand and has it been hit with tariffs?

Not that it was a bigger purchase…but I thought I did around $760ish declared value thinking i’d be under the $800 de minimis

I realized Buyee also includes outbound freight apart of the declared value. Normally international companies can exclude outbound freight from the tariff declared value. Got hit with a $80.06 tariff bill.

Used: Buyee Air

Not related to tariffs but just in case people are “panic exporting”: for shipping out of Japan any package whose declared value is over 200K Yen will require explicit customs declaration procedure.

For shipping through EMS this means extended processing times and an additional 2800 Yen process fee.

This is a long-established requirement by Japan customs and not related to recent tariffs.

Same here, except mine is above the formal entry limit (unaware of this threshold :grimacing:) should I expect to wait even longer because of this? been on Japan dispatch since the 7th.

purchased 150k yen slab from buyee. I will find out if I get hit by tariffs.

I am so confused. Waiting for 1 more card so i consolidate. So i heard after the 29th that Everyone that isnt USPS will charge 15% tariff based of purchase price of all items. However is it true that USPS will charge $80 per item? I thought it was per package but I heard someone say its per item. Could someone clarify?

I had a couple packages arrive that were around 10k or so and didn’t have any tariffs.

Perfect time to start bringing back those 20 percent coupons.

@ddk @Poochyena send any Japan shipments now if you can.

So from my understanding if you check out with EMS you’ll now get charged that additional shipping fee but no 15% customs upon receiving the items

It sounds like Buyee is using extortion to get more money. Either pay a $40 fee to us to avoid tariffs or pay 15% to your country, your choice

Are those who use Blackship or other buying services seeing similar things?

It’s odd for sure. I wonder if that really means pay a $40 fee and we will under declare your package lol, because idk how they’d have the power to say now you won’t get charged customs, man these tariffs are ridiculous

It’s crazy to me that Buyee is only just giving you the option of doing this now. For reference, services like Tenso have always allowed you to self-declare the value of your own packages.

Also, I like how they’re only offering this “solution” for Americans. As if the rest of the world who have been paying import taxes on everything they bought through Buyee (again, because they won’t let you self-declare) don’t matter. Nope, they just want the business of rich Americans. :upside_down_face:

I mean if your “value” of cards/package is >$300, ~$42 is a lower fee (if true that no tariff is needed) than paying the 15% tariff
