Exams published:

It is April 1998 2026, and you’ve just picked up the latest issue of the Shogakukan magazine. Each month, it comes in six different versions; one for each elementary school grade (from 1 to 6); but because it’s been a while since you were in elementary school, you go with the 5th grade issue. The 6th grade one was unfortunately already sold out.

As you scan the cover, you notice something that you have not heard about before:

Me? Becoming a Pokémon Professor?

Curious to know more, you quickly look at the table of contents to find out what it’s about.

You quickly go to page 22 and see the following spread.

You also notice this on page 64!

…

…

…

You wait patiently for the May issue.
…

Some more pages from this issue (both Pokémon and non-Pokémon)!
I suggest having a look at these to really get into the 1990s kid-in-Japan spirit.

I realized that one of the most coveted promo cards is tied to an event that is gradually fading from memory over the years. I managed to collect at least one copies for each of the monthly issues (often in multiple grades) and find the exams really fun and interesting, and in many cases, the answers are fairly un-google-able. This post is meant to both translate all of the materials into English and add to the work that Pokumon has already done so impressively, as well as provide everyone with an opportunity to relive the event themselves!

Each issue will be published in the first half of each month.
Answers to the four main exams and the mock exams will be recorded via Google Forms.
Correct answers will be revealed in the following issue.
Top scoring students along with the results will be announced January 2027

One month has passed, meaning we finally get to see what this Tamamushi University mentioned in the April issue is all about.

Below is the 1st Grade Issue (as noted, there is a monthly issue for each of the 1-6 grades). The 5th grade exam will be published in a few days. Everyone is free to answer both and collect more points.

Top scoring students will be announced next month. Those who collect the most points over the course of the next 7 months may win a prize!

1998 May 1st Grader Issue

Please read each page carefully.

You carefully scan the cover page and notice this:

THE MAY ENTRANCE EXAM

Carefully read the questions below. Note the Question number, the corresponding letter of the question (A, B or C) and the answer number and fill in the following answer sheet (Google Form):
SUBMIT ANSWERS HERE

Please use your E4 name to submit your answer.

The 5th Grade exam is going to be published in the next few days. You can only answer each exam once, so please do well!

  • there is no translated scan of page 81 as I did not have time to translate it in time. It’s pretty much the same questions but with different pokemon.

As before, here is a drive link with some of the other pages from the magazine.

A little bump for those waking up in the US timezone + some notes on the above:

The May exam is fairly simple but there are some tricky questions nonetheless. Ideally, people would answer without Googling but I know people will Google regardless - which is fine!

The May 5th grade exam I will release this week will be trickier.

The August, September and December ones will be considerably trickier, so take this as a warm up and a nice way to score points while you can . Some of the future questions will not be Google-able anyways.

As for translations, I am sure not all will be perfect, and there may be some typos or errors. Feel free to flag if it materially changes the context!

1998 May 5th Grader Issue Entrance Exam

You will see the difficulty ramps up a nice bit from the 1st grader exam published above!

  1. Scores accumulate - you can take both the 1st grader and the 5th grader exams for the month of May (and going forward, this rule will apply to all future exams).
  2. The deadline to submit answers for all exams is until the end of the year (by which the last Dec exam would’ve been published). This is to ensure everyone has time to complete all, not penalising those who may be busy.
  3. However, standings will be posted each month.
  4. As before, wrong answers deduct points. If unsure, leave blank!

Feel free to ask if anything is unclear

Question 5: Amendment to question 5 from the 5th Grade exam:

Thanks to @Quuador for spotting this.

I accidentally removed a critical hint that made the question unanswerable. This has now been edited both in the Google Forms and in the image above. Apologies!!

Those who already submitted their answers are free to submit a new exam answer form (but only answers to Question 5 will count as updated). You can also DM me the answers to Question 5 and I will update it for you.

Question 4 clarification:

The exercise is to choose a text that best matches the characters’ in-game dialogues / flavour text. Options 1-6 are not 100% word to word identical to the in-game script!

MAY 1st GRADE EXAM - TOP RANKING STUDENTS !

The May 1st Exam was by far the easier of the two released so far, and will 100% be the easiest out of the entire exam set published this year.

So far, we have had 20 entries for the 1st Grade exam, and the following 6 students take the top 6 places (in no particular order, without the score being revealed).

:trophy: :trophy:

:trophy: :trophy:

The highest score we’ve had for this exam so far is 100/100.
The lowest score we’ve had for this exam so far is 46/100.

Do not forget that entries are not closed and I will allow answers for the entirety of the school year (to allow people join at any time to not penalise those who missed a month). As such, the results will be released at the end for all the exams (so in 6 months) along with a personalised report sheet.

With the June exam around the corner and the recently released May 5th Grade one, the results will very quickly change (and for some, they already did!).

Top ranking students at the end of the year will be awarded accordingly, so do not forget to take each exam!

Here is a very vague sneak peek of one of the prizes:

Also, a reminder for everyone to complete the May 5th Grader exam here!

Still a lot of room for everyone to catch up. I doubt we will see many 100/100 scores in the upcoming months’ exams :speak_no_evil_monkey:

I remember looking up some of the questions (not answers) for the final exam years ago, and some are ridiculous. No way anyone gets them all.

Edit: My neck is getting sore taking this exam LOL

Oww I completely missed this. I see that we can answer the exam retroactively. Thank you for giving the option. Appreciate it.

Cheers!
