Why? My personal childhood experience growing up collecting cards and playing the gameboy games is just pure nostalgia. Warm, fuzzy feelings.
Yes, these days with the scalping, shilling and scamming things can feel a bit icky at times. But if that’s true of anything. I think that there are so many kind people in the hobby willing to help out. And that also makes me think it’s wholesome.
Not only does it take strong imagination to come up with 1000+ recognizable designs but storylines from manga to anime to games to cards all showcase how uniquely layed out the franchise is. Also the community itself is amazingly creative constantly putting out new art, new ideas, new fan creations, etc. The franchise itself lends itself well to expressing your personal inspirations and creativity.
Pokemon opens up so many avenues in life whether you know it or not, and teaches you things early on in life between the games and anime. It can also help people in need in the form of a love like music, family etc. Its such a great thing in life to have.
I’ve always looked at Pokemon has something that can’t hurt you. Something you long for after a long day where you can just pick up your favorite slab, or binder, and just marvel at each card like old friends and before you know it, it’s time for bed to do it all over again.
I’m going to cheat by using a compound adjective: choose-your-own-adventure.
People from all walks of life can choose to engage with as many or as few aspects of the Pokemon franchise as they want, and also as deeply or superficially as they want. It just permeates so many different areas of life (e.g. gaming, music, art, collecting… even sleeping!) that you can really dial your participation to whatever fits your liking.
The original premise of the game and franchise was a rather self-centered one - “[I] Gotta catch 'em all!” - But even in that, you were required to trade with others to complete your pokedex, and the collecting nature of the game and the trading or collecting nature of the TCG quickly made it a very social franchise. Almost NO ONE who has touched pokemon has done so in a vacuum. IDK if this is true, but I think it’s a reasonable statement. And from that, things like this forum have grown, people changed, lives saved, the list goes on.
The pokemon community, more by nature than any other, is one of people coming together over something they love. And even if it’s just for a momentary benefit (a fleeting trade or a game with someone you’ll never see again), that moment has had major staying power in many lives and souls.
