One of my dad’s buddies is a statefarm agent and has insured our cars and everything for our family my entire life. It has been past due for me to insure my collection or at least a chunk of it, but statefarm will not insure pokemon or trading cards. They will insure sports cards/memorabilia but not Pokiemans…
Unfortunate, but if anyone doesn’t mind sharing who they use to insure their collectibles it would help me out. Maybe I don’t even need to? Maybe i should just buy a safe? Maybe I should bury them in my backyard?
Safe/Safe deposit box are the best way to go IMO. I have a large “gun” safe from Liberty that inside of it has some small sentry fireboxes for double protecting the more valuable stuff. Really valuable off site in safe deposit boxes (a recent change). The bulk of my collection though is inside the main safe in the BCW cardboard graded card “shoe boxes”.
What is high/low/medium value is different for everyone. I have less than $1,000 invested in the protection of my cards of which I have many single cards outnumbering that amount in value so it is super reasonable.
If you want to insure them, certain companies will insure you but for quite a small limit and often want some proof of value that a pain to make at the beginning to satisfy them and then even more to maintain over time. I can imagine any kind of claim may be more of a headache than more straightforward items too.
I’d consider a safe deposit box at your local bank. My bank charges $33 a year for a box probably large enough to hold 30 cards. Only downside is the ease of access to your collection IMO.
Ive used these guys for years. Have referred many friends to them. Fill out the form and they will give you a call. Really easy to work with and will tailor to your specific situation and needs. FYI I have no affiliation with them, just happy with the service.
I just filled-out their online estimate form. The online form does say that there is a maximum collection value of $1,000,000.00. However, it also says to call if collection value is greater than $1,000,000.00 - so it sounds like they may have additional policies / pricing for “premium” collections.
I’ll send you a PM on what my collection is valued - and what I got for a quote!
The premium varies depending on what kind of safeguards you have in place and other factors. ie full house alarm system that will alert the police, large safe, ect. I calculated mine out and it came to roughly $2.35 per $1,000. They cover everything from fire - theft. Even accidental, say a glass display falls over and something gets damaged in your collection.
Some other things covered, away from premises, if you bring high value items with you while traveling and shipment lost and stolen packages are covered.
They offer both collector and business as 2 separate policies as well.
I don’t believe there is a maximum. No one I know has filed a claim but I did a lot of research into the company before hand. I did read about people who have filed claims and were paid out accordingly.
One thing to note about Collect Insure: You’re probably going to get more solicitation than you want if you inquire. I did an inquiry and I was contacted about ten times as many times as I felt was reasonable, including three times after I specifically requested not to be contacted again.
Not a comment on the quality of their service at all. Just be prepared. Haha
