Sold my entire collection except for 2 cards, feeling regretful

Feeling very bittersweet right now, I am in the process of selling every card I own except my TMB Wind and Master’s Scroll.

I’ll see how I feel in the coming months for the aftermath, but I honestly just feel a lot of regret and almost like a part of me just left when selling since a few of these cards I may just never get back or will be priced out in the future.

I know the money is better used elsewhere than having 6 digits in Pokémon cards (which people have told me that is insane when my biggest asset holdings is cardboard besides my house)

Maybe I shot the gun too quick, but obviously can’t reverse it since a lot of my cards are currently in auction. I do hope the feeling of regret fades away. Have you ever felt this type of regret before?

You will regret selling your collection and have to live with it the rest of your life. Your heart tells you it was the wrong decision. Money will hit your account and you will not feel any glimpse of satisfaction.

At least that’s what I read on the internet.

If you already feel regret this fast then it was probably the wrong decision

If you understood this, it is a good enough reason to feel temporary regret and then move on. Nothing wrong with being a 2-card collector in this climate

This is the post I fear most if I did go ahead and empty my collection

Back in my model train days I had a long term goal. It was to own 3 out of the 50 1:87 brass models made of this magnificent locomotive in the 1957-1964 livery above. It took me 18 months of daily grinding (and I do mean daily grinding) to get the first 2, I don’t think anyone else could’ve pulled it off the way I did. The 3rd never came, and during the financial crisis I had to sell off everything because 1) I needed the money and 2) my business model failed.

That was 18 years ago and it still irks me. I didn’t have a choice, I don’t do model trains anymore, I don’t think about it all the time. But it is a wound that will never heal. The locomotive has come up for sale publicly 2 times in those 18 years.

Depends on why you sold it. If you need the money, you’ll feel just fine. Cards you miss can be replaced in lower grades at fractions of the price. If you are selling just trying to time the market, you may look back and feel bothered.

Time heals all wounds or something like that!

If you are going to use the cash to do something life altering then it’s a brilliant decision IMO.

There’s always a way to reverse it …
just outbid everyone and buy your cards back. You might lose on fees but you will get your cards back

As @smpratte has mentioned before “You are paid for your grief”

Yes you will potentially be regretful of the cards you have sold, but you have to look at what you can do with that money in your life right now.

I would say never feel pressured by other’s horrid opinions. Some are helpful but most are tainted with jealousy.

This decision you have to make for yourself and some will praise and some will cast judgment. At the end of the day, what is best for you and your family.

Just focus on that and you will be ok. There is more to life than money and cardboard.

Sounds like it is life changing money and in some cases it doesn’t make sense having shiny cardboard when you can put the money to improving the quality of your life.

You still have 2 top tier cards. Perhaps focus on another set within the hobby which isn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg

Idk man wait like a year and see if you still miss it. If you’re unwilling to buy it back at the then-market price, I’d leave it alone

The best advice I can give you is never live with regrets.

Cards can always be replaced. Pokemon will eventually have the hype drop and if you want to buy back what you sold I bet it’ll eventually be cheaper than what you sold it for.

If you are very unsure if you want to sell all of the cards, then maybe remove the listings from whatever site its on if its possible?

Remember.

Like some others have mentioned, I think each individuals situation is different on selling. IE. If you have a plan to reinvest this money into more traditional investments, pay off debt, fund a big purchase. If you have a plan on what to do with the money, I dont think you should regret the sale and time will heal…especially if this will improve your life. You still have two awesome cards that are grails to other collectors.

If you’re selling to try and time the market/have the money just sit in your account or pressured to sell from family/friends…then I personally think the reject might be justified.

Considering the addiction crisis over the past few years, this is really a good step in the right direction. Now you can set a large % of the proceeds to yourself and use the rest to buy a small handful of cards you enjoy the most.

We donating all the rayquaza proceeds to the only teen on the e4 forum ( @anthony_CCG dosent count he’s old enough to drink in come countries) right?

All jokes aside, really happy to see this. I used to be concerned about your buying troubles but now I think it’ll be alright!

It seems that at least once a year a thread is started that is along the lines of “what’s your biggest regret in pokemon?”

The two mains takeaways from those threads that I’ve seen people say over and over:

  1. I shouldn’t have sold.
  2. I should have bought more

Looking forward to the post here in two months where you’ve bought back your entire collection and more.

Also have fun getting to know your IRS agent.

Thank you for sharing your story, yeah its so hard to have to sell stuff and reflecting on the past. Are you still going for them?

Yes that is fair, I wanted to go into more traditional assets to build other places than just having a insane amount of money in pokemon. I don’t really care for the money that much, but the amount I had just felt weird in a hobby.

:skull:

Thank you, I hope this is the right decision. It is still tough but hopefully looking back I am satisfied.

I just plan to use the money to go into traditional investment index funds and some other things, I still plan on collecting in the future but it just feels weird currently. I’m not necessarily timing the market, but just knowing everything in 1 basket wasn’t very settling even though I never really considered my collection an investment; Just the negative thought if someone would break into my house or a house fire has always been in the back of my mind. So now I want to just hold my 2 favorite graded cards and I still have my binder of niche promos like vending and vs series, secret santa gifts, and other memorable cards in a binder.
