Set cards will always be affordable in the lower conditions, always another copy.
It’s the more limited promotional cards that are a problem.

I feel like I’ve been telling you this for as long as discord has been around but I think you slightly misunderstand the meaning of that quote. The quote is contrasting the availability of trophy cards to set cards. Certain extremely rare cards have hit the public market maybe once or twice; some cards have never seen a public sale before. If you miss an opportunity to buy it, you may never see another copy again.
Contrast that to set cards where if you miss a buying opportunity, there’s basically a guarantee that you’ll see the same card pop up again within a relatively short period of time. But the “always another copy” does not specify what price the next copy will sell at.
As the buying power of the average collector increases and as the finite availability of ungraded mint cards dwindles, the sales of PSA 10 mint set cards will occur less frequently and at a higher price point. They are still ‘available’ in the sense they are basically guaranteed to appear again but perhaps at a rate or a price where people would rather buy ungraded nm copies or low PSA grades.
Whether or not the supply will dwindle to the level where this could happen was my original question. The principle that “there will always be another copy” doesn’t really answer that.
You know what would be kind of neat to collect? An amusing collection of “played” cards in some laughable condition bought on ebay. I just came across this “PSA 9 GYARADOS!” on ebay and had the idea suddenly: www.ebay.com/itm/Pokemon-Base-Unlimited-GYRADOS-Holo-6-102-Holo-PSA-9-Mint/152849235396?hash=item2396863dc4:g:~WQAAOSwVNxaSkzD
I’ve bought a lot (for my finances anyway) over the last couple years but I will probably need to slow down now as I am saving for a house and kids in the future. My plan is to never sell my cards unless it is absolutely necessary though.
To me they are definitely a long term investment to hold. Some of the higher value purchases I couldn’t get for the same price again. Not too mention the cards look too great and give too much nostalgia to consider selling them!
I only got in last year, I’ll be holding what I’ve bought for at least 10 years, will reevaluate how I feel about owning the card, the hobby etc. later in life. I won’t ever need to sell anything I own and I don’t plan to in the short or mid term, I also still have goals that I’m working through collection wise. They will probably take a while mostly because I’m lazy and hate looking for things on eBay.
I try to keep pokemon and my other primary hobby(cars) fresh by rotating them with my work schedule. For example I’ve been on day shift the past month so I’ve been focusing my efforts on pokemon where for example hobby shops are open, and eBay listings usually end durring the day. I start back on night shift tomorrow night, so on my days off when there’s not much to do at night I’ll tinker with my project cars.
I got scammed hard once and i was on the verge of quitting then and there knowing someone could scam me so easily (I was at fault to) made me just question buying anything again. I wanted to sell all my boxes and cards that I had worked hard to get! But I friend told me to stick at it and keep at other goals which I did
I go through phases of picking up a few cards, then some old games, then a few records. Pokemon specifically has been a part of the cycle since 99. Apparently I’m not done because I’m still here.
I’ve just got into it really, I’m collecting cards that I feel are unique and really like from an art point of view so that if the zombie apocalypse hits and the price drops I will still be able to enjoy those cards. Assuming I’m not a zombie of course. PSA 9 is my limit and that makes things much more affordable, the cards still look great.
Not anymore. I collected Pokémon on and off from age 7 to 15, and then again from the age of 23 to the present day - I’m 26 now (and Yu-Gi-Oh on and off from the age of 9 to 16, and then again from the age of 19 to 22).
I’ve never sold my collections off however, and never will. I know I will regret it forever if I do. Sometimes I even regret selling of some pogs I had as a kid, even though I hadn’t touched them in over 10 years. Would still like to look at them just once, but they’re already gone. I’ve been much more involved in Pokémon, especially now that I have these Pokémon-focused collections. So I won’t ever sell them off. Let’s hope they also aren’t lost/destroyed/stolen somewhere in the future, which would be my main concern.
So yeah, I might take a break every now and then (although not anytime soon), but I’m definitely here to stay. Especially on this great forum.

I’ve never been out of the hobby and never will unless Pokemon stops existing somehow. I love this hobby and it’s been part of my life since Pokemon started on tv here when I was 7 years old (now I’m 26). It’s been a long way and have zero investment into it - I only do it because collecting and Pokemon in general makes me happy.
The pokemon community is never disappointing. Quite fun reads
I think I’ll always have interest. Most of the fun comes in the form of the chase and includes flipping as well to help support my card buying. I keep wanting to go bigger and hope to meet all my goals. My dream is to someday have my collection be worth 100,00 dollars so I can tell everyone that thought I was silly that it all worked out.
I think I’ll definitely sell someday, but will always keep my absolute favorites. It’s all in good fun and it’s fun to organize, show and hunt some more.
This hobby has helped me in a big way since i started collecting again a few years ago so if i said i ever planned on selling my actual collection then i would be tellig lies!
As a guy who has only been participating in the last 3 years, I can say there’s always something for me to dig into. I started with a lot of the 1st ed. Neo sets, then hit aquapolis and expedition, ex team rocket returns, and now sense I’ve been more involved in my gun hobby, I’ve been dumping into delta species and ex full arts from XY. I feel like there’s always something out there for me to chase. No matter the price. Even if it’s only a card a month, or a submission every 3 months. I don’t always need to be droppin stacks yo!
What does your gun hobby have to do with XY and Delta Species? @canucksfan007
