So buying cards from Japan just got 24% more expensive

Their pricing confuses me then, because that page I screenshotted suggests if I send to CGC UK and they ship to the US, I don’t pay VAT? So it’d be £11 per card? In that case why even show the VAT price haha

Jumping in: if I sell my PSA 10 slabs in Japan, does it mean I can get them for a better deal than 6 months ago? Mostly E-Series vintage holos.

Planning on using eye-ripping Hareruya again to offload my unwanted cards.

To add more context, I’m trying to do some Hangover level math: Japanese stores also sell to US markets, but since prices have increased 24% due to tariffs, that means less US buyers buying from the JP market…?

But PSA pausing all international submissions might also mean the current PSA cards will go up in value?

That’s as far as I got.

Maybe my understanding is wrong but the tariff is borne by the buyer / importer. So regardless the pricing, if you are buying from Japan as a person in the US you will need to pay higher fees getting the cards to you in the US.

If you are trying to sell your cards in Japan, those should be going for market value and not higher price because the tarrifs should have no impact. Only time will tell if the buyers from US to Japan will reduce because of these tarrifs, which may lead to cheaper or more competitive pricing from Japanese sellers.

Cheers!

The only thing I can think is if they are referring to if you submitted/shipped your cards directly to CGC USA rather than through the UK office? But I agree it is confusing!

Thanks mate! Always good to have your input. I’ll reactivate my IG and post some pokemon-Japan content in two weeks.

Depending on cards and prices, I might be interested in buying from you (I’m in Japan)
No worries if you’d rather the ease of selling all to a shop

I don’t think they’ve provided correct information. The $800 de minimis exemption is still in place for Japan.

Do you have any up to date source for that? Everything I’ve read has said tariffs on any amount, no minimum threshold.

Keep in mind that PSA has a fully working branch in Japan which means Japanese can just grade locally instead of having to take the 24% L by sending to US.

In fact you might have to compete with local graded slabs if Japanese sellers started running into trouble selling them to US and had to keep them circulated within the country (plus slabs graded in Japan all got the medical-grade new casing).

They sent out a correction email

Do you (or anyone else) happens to have access to an overview of these “de minimis exemptions” from other countries to the US?

I’m about to deal with something similar myself, and will be shipping a card of exactly $800 value to the US, from Europe.

I’m wondering if there’s a similar exemption for Europe or not.

China / Hong Kong: Ends May 2nd.

Other Countries: Ends once “adequate systems are in place to fully and expeditiously process and collect duty revenue”.

So until the systems are in place / announced nothing has changed for Japan.

Who’s willing to be the lab rat?

I wouldn’t fully trust that how something is handled for one person/shipping provider/consolidator would necessarily apply for another given there’s still some confusion out there. Even within some of those bounds there could be variation :grimacing:

That being said I’ll probably consolidate and ship out my sub $800 Buyee orders in the next week or two

Is there a possibility that Tariff man is using this to strongarm other countries into a better deal for the US? That he’s willing to renegotiate the conditions and lift the tariffs?

Yes

Among other things, yes. More than a possibility.

Probably.

Probably not.

I’ll only be the lab rat for selling my cards in Japan and seeing if it’s affected the market there.

So, as of right now, nothing has changed apparently. At least when it comes to Buyee. I’ve only been charged customs fees once or twice on a package over 800, but I know that limit has always been there. I guess I’ll just make sure to keep it under that from now on.

This is all an elaborate method to pump the price on the president’s secret modern japanese pokemon card stash. He will then sell his old stock at the price of the new tariff levels, then after he is done, remove the tarrifs, which crashes prices and creates panic selling, crashing prices, allowing him to buy back his collection at a discount.

In all seriousness. I considered that this could create disinterest in foreign cards, especially anything that isn’t japanese for USA people. But then I also realized that the panic buying people might see it as a sign that “more expensiver = more betterer” and thus make them flock to it despite the fact that it isn’t due to supply&demand, but just a simple price increase from tariffs. I would kind of hope it just stabilizes exports to allow the people in JP to have their cards and enjoy them. I feel bad when like half of JP 151 got exported due to masterballs not being in most languages.
