As mentioned last time (in January), since I keep forgetting to post these, I will post two at the same time every time I do randomly remember again. So here is the second one of today:
The fourth set of the English TCG, released on February 24th, 2000, and wasn’t released in any other languages. When it was released, it wasn’t too popular since all the artworks are reused from the Base Set and Jungle. It is the first English set to use the Cosmos Holofoil, whereas the Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil sets all used Galaxy Holofoil.
Maybe ‘cause I missed the early days of og pokemon, or maybe because Italian base set didn’t have a galaxy pattern, TO ME the cosmo holo looks 100x better.
It triggers my brain in a way unlimited English just can’t, and the “2” logo is actually kinda cute.
Completely forgot, but as a kid I and a lot of my friends/classmates thought there were 1st edition; 2nd edition; and unlimited edition cards, with this set being the 2nd edition.
I actually like Base set 2 for nostalgia reasons, believe it or not. I bought packs over other sets since the odds for getting useful playable cards were very good. The few rare trainer cards left out from Base set were not very useful and the few rare cards left out from Jungle (eevolutions) were also not very good. Meanwhile, Fossil had almost no strong cards. So, Base set 2 was better to open if you were trying to build decks at the time. Having the set in a binder does look a bit strange owing to the mixture of Base and Jungle.
It should’ve been Base Set 2, not a hotchpotch of Base and Jungle. It shouldn’t have been littered across every store counter as the only booster option at a time when the soul still hungered for Base and Jungle. The sealed items should’ve looked better. The number 2 set symbol, while fine on it’s own, attractive even, didn’t work well in conjunction with all the negative factors. And even if everything was improved, those of us who preferred, who still prefer Galaxy would’ve still considered it second rate, though probably not to such a terminal degree.
Maybe Base set 2 would’ve had its renaissance, instead of being an imago of unfulfillment.
