Set of the Fortnight #54 - Vending Machine Series 1 (Blue)

I’m so random with posting these, but whatever… The random name picker has spoken again, and this time it’s the Vending Machine Series 1, the final Vending Machine Series thread for the set-of-the-fortnight.

As always, discuss:

  • Favorite cards in the set
  • Worst cards in the set
  • How you feel about this set in general

This Japanese exclusive set was released on March 23rd, 1998, before any English Pokémon cards were even a thing. It’s name, which was solely made-up by fans since it’s real set name is actually ‘Expansion Sheet’ (拡張シート), came from the fact that the cards from this set came from cardboard vending machine sheets, containing three glossy cards each alongside some coins and damage counters. With just 36 cards, it’s a pretty small set to discuss again, but it’s defintely a very memorable and unique set, alongside the Vending Machine Series 2 and 3 we’ve already discussed prior.

Although it’s far from my favorite Pokémon, I really like the lighting/colors used in this Paras artwork and it’s therefore my favorite artwork from this mini set:

Some others I really like are:

As for my least favorite card from the set, I go with this Geodude. I don’t really like the drawing style, and I completely forgot this card existed up until just a moment ago:

And although I know they were drawn by little kids, I also don’t really like the Poliwrath nor Snorlax:

The Mr. Mime isn’t too bad, though.

The Porygon is my absolute favourite from the Blue sheet and also the entire vending series.

My two other favorites are:

I think looking at Caterpie now, it looks so much like the style Shinji Kanda uses. But I absolutely adore the little bug in the myriad of foliage. Abra is pure vibes!

Being the first of its kind, I really like this set. Unique concept to feature Pokemon found in their ‘in-game’ habitats.

Cheers!

Vending are sets of extremes. The best illustrations are almost as good as they come, the worst could give sadaji and Yoshinob a run for their money.

Rattata is probably my favorite. It’s just perfect.

Porygon is my favourite but since it has been posted, here is another beautiful card

It seems other people agree with me based on the cards posted, but for me Vending 1 is an absolute masterclass from Kusube. This set really captures their style well and is part of the reason they’re one of my favorite artists!

Series 1 covers the first few towns/routes of Kanto which is probably why most illustrations seem so peaceful. Love Himeno’s squirtle for that reason, so relaxing.

Also want to take a moment to acknowledge Komiya’s chansey, makes me chuckle every time:
