I was really tempted to put Pikachu gold star in S. As someone who doesn’t care much for the lil rat bastard, the pose just has so much swagger to it. Easily the best Pikachu art.

Here’s my unpopular list.
- I don’t like Neo Destiny shinings.
- The artwork of the Suicune, Raikou, and Entei gold stars aren’t bad, but issues with their distribution make them undesirable.

Shining Gyarados and Shining Mew are two of my favourite cards ever, the rest of the tiers I could swap around depending on how the wind is blowing

took me a while to figure out how to actually do this tierlist… decided to group cards by the sets that they came out in to honor the “best pokemon subsets” title…
S tier: Play! eevee stars, deoxys stars, and hoenn starter stars.
- all three of these groups are the definition of S tier for me. true grails within the rarity
A tier: the regis, mysterious mountain’s crystals (largely caried by celebi), the neo rev shinies, corocoro mew, and the gift box stars.
- all of these are either super cool promos or just really nice groupings found in a set
B tier: the delta stars (decided to just do all of these together), split earth’s crystals (largely carried by golem, but ho-oh is good too), and miracle crystal’s stars
- still great groupings, but there are certain things holding them back like the delta foil styling, or just not my favorite art within the rarity
C tier: delta species’ stars, golden sky silver ocean’s stars, and the town on no map’s crystals
- bottom tier of the rarities as far as a set’s grouping. unfortunate for metagross bc i love that card, but the kyogre and groudon are so awkward in their art. aside from suicune, the johto beasts are the most underwhelming gold star artworks for me. the raikou especially just feels like a regular holo unless you look closely. as for the crystals, i still love the rarity style, but this is easily the weakest bunch for me.
D tier: neo destiny’s shinies.
- i feel bad for ttar bc i genuinely love that card as well. celebi, raichu, mewtwo, and kabutops are all pretty nice, but the other three drag the set down so far for me. the foiling style doesn’t translate well for me for the most part. these cards were some of the earliest prototypes for doing something unconventional and i appreciate what they represent, but i have no desire to own any of these aside from ttar and maybe celebi.

Dude why does everyone hate crystal kingdra. I… I simply don’t understand. It’s masterful. And he’s emerging from the underwater ruins of aquapolis. Protecting it from the approaching intruder. Like Geosgaeno in the Baaj temple in ffx.

@brendantheclayboy CG art is very divisive, especially the older CG art of WOTC and ex era. Some people love it, some hate it. Look at TMTA in the ex tier list thread. It’s almost always at the top or bottom of peoples tier list but not really in the middle. So I’m not surprised the Kingdra not super popular compared to the other traditionally drawn artworks. I personally adore it myself.

… I am so confused by your choices. Goofy Charizard S tier versus flying zard on low tier. Gyarados is in B tier but Embreon/Espeon ranked higher. What did you rank by?

Your entire ranking indicates you cannot be trusted. Crystal Lugia in C tier. Clear bias for gold stars in S tier even poopy ones that nobody could justify. God tier cards only in A and below regi cards. Crystal Ho Oh in B tier, with the gyarados ranking equal to celebi, the poopiest of all on the list.

It was freshly graded by my (amazing) LGS, and they had it priced at £600, because they’re anarchists or something. I traded in some modern bulk, so got it a few £’s cheaper than that too… it’s the kind of deal I’d never find for one again!
Absolutely! The holo treatment lends itself to the art of Kabutops being silhouetted against the sunset and just works on every level.
The homage to it in the artwork of Shining Genesect years later must show that there’s some quiet appreciation at TPC too.
For me it’s the boring CGI look of Kingdra itself. The rest of the crystals have such dynamic art, but Kingdra is just…there.
