Reholdering Old Labels/Slabs after the Scandal?

Collectors owning cards without scans are impacted by the latest scandal. For those of you with cards that lack scans, will you be sending in your cards to get reholdered? Please vote depending on which camp you fall in, either

a) those with 2 certs that predate the lighthouse label (aka pre Gen X as defined in this article)

b) those with cards with lighthouse labels (aka post Gen X as defined in this article), but no scans

For those with 2 certs that predate the lighthouse label (aka pre Gen IX as defined in this article), what are you planning to do?
  • Reholder with new label and scans
  • Keep in old holder and old label

  • Reholder and get scans
  • Keep in new label without scans

If you have any thoughts on this please share as well, thank you.

10 generations of never changing their holder wink

I already mentioned it on another thread, but my reason for souring on my 2xxx cert slabs pre-dates this issue.

Anecdotally over the last few months I had multiple of my 2xxx cert slabs consistently underperform whenever a newer cert option was available. Like when two auctions were running simultaneously, or when both were available at fixed price. My older certs always performed worse. Even Japanese, even when my 10 really looked like a 10, it didn’t matter.

It annoyed me more than it should have. And so I’m planning to reholder my old certs. The fake slab situation just cements the decision for me.

This happens because most people are not looking at the card inside, but only the grade and grade’s age.

I hope it will change someday .. but the positive point is we can sometimes find cheaper slabs with better quality cards inside !

I believe this “Oh the cert leads with 2 I don’t want it anymore” sentiment will slowly shift once we enter 20X certs, outlined in a half satire but half semirealistic theory I call the 20 Million Cert Theory

Not sure if it’s all about the 2xx cert, to me it’s more about the old label itself (which is kind of ugly)

Yeah I suspect reholdered 2 certs will benefit from this. Especially considering recent events, since there may be more paranoia in the market now around slabs without scans. So multiple reasons to reholder.

The risk is PSA damages the card or downgrades it during reholder. It’s a risk calculation for sure.

No, I won’t reholder all of my slabs. That would be very expensive and unnecessary. I have reholdered some, but I’m choosing that based on price, whether I want to sell them, rarity, and whether there are meaningful descriptive changes to the label.

No point in doing anything until there’s a significant established change in behaviour of the market. Even then I would only reslab if I was ready to sell

None of my cards are fake so why should I worry?

There’s one reason to reholder the real card now, but it depends on how likely you think the following will ever occur.

Suppose one of the fake slabs gets sent to PSA for reholder. Say PSA doesn’t realize it’s a fake, and so they reholder it and scan it. That would fully legitimize the fake card in their system.

Meanwhile, the real card, still in its original slab, is still in someone’s collection somewhere. It was never scanned. Any authenticity disputes in the future will go up against PSA’s official scan, which was of the fake card that they wrongly authenticated.

I would like to believe this will never happen, but it is a scary thought if it ever does.

Does PSA authenticate slabs based on the scans they have? If they let a fake slab through, I think it’s not because they did or didn’t have the scans to compare with, but by a completely separate mistake of their own

In that scenario there is no scan when the fake is sent to them. So a scan cannot be part of that authenticity check on the fake. But they are supposed to have other security features, albeit fewer in the older slabs. We hope/assume those other security features will be used and will stop all fakes from ever getting wrongly authenticated.

If one did get through, it’s unclear how they would handle authenticity on the real card in the future. But the real card’s scan wouldn’t match the scan they have on file (the fake).

Not reholdering. Part of the reason is the big risk in transportation and the reholdering itself.

Another part is that fakes seem to be using new labels only, so some of the older features in a way give it more credibility.

(P.S. scans make sense for older cards that have unique holo patterns or cards that have distinctive features / defects, but newer cards where the only “proof” may be centering make me worry)
